WHO IS HANNAH OTTO?
Hannah Otto is one of the leading lights in US ultra-endurance and marathon MTB racing — multi-time national marathon MTB champion and holder of the Kokopelli Trail FKT she set in 2024 (130 miles in 13 hours, 49 minutes). She races a mixed calendar of marathon MTB, ultra-distance gravel including Unbound 200, and select FKT projects. For Roadman listeners, her perspective on training for events that mix steep, technical terrain with 8+ hours of pacing is one of the cleanest in the sport.
OTTO ON ULTRA-ENDURANCE
Otto’s key positions on ultra-endurance riding.
- Marathon MTB and ultra gravel reward repeatable threshold output more than peak FTP.
- FKT projects are the ultimate fuelling rehearsal — there is no aid station, no race kitchen, and no second chance.
- Recovery between long ultra-endurance days requires the same discipline as a Grand Tour stage racer.
IN OTTO’S OWN WORDS
Verbatim from Hannah Otto’s appearances on the podcast.
“I had on my top tube every 5 to 10 miles I had what her split was and so I could tell whether I was ahead or behind at really close intervals because across a distance like that it's all too easy to become distracted to kind of become laxidasical um and all of a sudden you've lost 10 minutes.”
“In that first attempt I ended up doing about 13 hours well 13 plus hours of riding um on just over 2 and 1 half liters.”
“I was ahead of that previous time all the way the I was ahead of it for 125 miles I came into the final single track which is 12 miles to go dead set with the time and I came unraveled in those last 12 miles and I missed it by just 15 minutes.”
