CENTRAL GOVERNOR THEORY

Hypothesis that the brain limits exercise proactively to protect the body — reducing power before physiological systems actually fail.

Proposed by Prof. Tim Noakes. Evidence: athletes always have residual capacity (sprint finishes after 'exhaustion'), and psychological interventions improve performance without changing physiology. Practical implication: mental training and competition genuinely unlock physical performance.
