I broke my wrist
But learnt something very valuable
So I broke my wrist last week.
Mid-summer, the weather here is actually good for once, and I can't ride. Typical.
I coach a chef. Brilliant at what he does. He’s one of the best in the world.
He's got a phrase I really like: “crisis opportunity”
The idea is that even a bad situation usually has something good hiding in it. You just have to look.
So I've been looking.
Normally when I'm injured I jump on the trainer and do a big indoor block. It works, but it's grim, and it feels like a waste to be stuck inside when it's finally sunny.
So I'm not doing that.
I've wanted to get into running for years and never have. There was always a reason not to. A race coming up, a training block I didn't want to mess with, that kind of thing.
Well, now I can't ride anyway. So there's no excuse left.
I can't grip the bars or push hard on the bike, but I can run fine.
The plan is to build up from scratch and try to run a 10k in under 40 minutes while the wrist heals.
I'll be straight with you, that's a big ask off no running at all. I might not get there. But it gives me something to chase.
I'm also just curious what running does to my cycling. Everyone has a theory about it and I've never actually tried it myself. Now I will.
I'll keep you posted. The good runs, the bad ones, whatever I learn along the way.
And if you've gone from cycling into running, or you've been meaning to and never started, hit reply and let me know. Always good to hear from you.
Talk soon, Anthony
