Welcome and episode intro
On today's Roadman Cycling Podcast, I want to talk about three tips you can use to hit the ground running this season. Let's cue that intro! The big question is this. How do we use cycling as a tool to improve our health, our happiness and our long-term? That is the question on this podcast and give you the answers. My name is Anthony Walsh and welcome to the Roadman Podcast. Roadman, thank you for joining me for another Roadman Cycling Podcast. The podcasts are coming taken fast at the moment and we're making that move across to video podcasts as well in the upcoming week. So all exciting, exciting stuff here on the podcast. Yesterday we had Mr. J-Voyne from Alpason, Fennex. Awesome having J-Back. As I talked about, it's this, we're getting this snapshot into the evolution of J. As an athlete, but also as a person, you can hear yesterday how much he's coming out of a shell, how much he has opinions, and he's not sitting on the fence anymore. It was absolutely great talking to him and catching up with him again, and it definitely won't be the last time, you know, any great podcast that has its characters. And you know, Joe Rogue and has its characters to consistently come back and J-Voyne is one one of our characters in the show. And we love Jay and we wish them all the best this season. Today's podcast, I wanna give you a tree really tangible tips that you can take and you can action. So make sure you hit the ground running this season and don't make these mistakes that I've previously made in the past. And now is about a good time to start actioning this stuff as we're heading into the season. Before we dive into the actual podcast proper, let me remind you about Patreon. So Patreon is how we fund this podcast. It's entirely user funded. If you want to get access to the secret podcast, the last secret podcast was Help To Set Goals and Zenodel One coming out in the next couple of days. If you want to get access to that weekly secret podcast and if you want to support the podcast and make my dream of trying to become a full-time podcaster in reality, however you can do that and make a small little contribution, it's over on patreon.com forward slash Anthony under score watch, take you about two seconds to check out, price for a point of beer once a month. Okay, let's jump into it. Today, I wanna talk about three really tangible tips that you can use to make sure you hit the ground running this year. Tip number one, and I've seen this all too often, as an athlete and as a client, sitting on both sides of the fence, don't start the season too hard. Everybody is frustrated and we've had a frustrating winter of short evenings, cold weather, getting that motivation in the morning to get out early, admit that cold frost, you know, there's nothing worse than getting out from under your blankets, you know, maybe you'd be soid your partner, it's all warm, you have to go out and look holy for us the horrible day. I understand all those winter frustrations, but as the season's approaching, you need to temper your enthusiasm. If you burst out the gate like my new puppies out the front door, you will not last for the season. The season starts in a round match and we go all the way till the end of September. Make sure your motivation is sustainable across the year and specifically make sure it's peaking towards your target events. There's no point in having your motivation hitting full gas in March and your target event isn't until say it middle of June or July. So temperate enthusiasm to start the season. That's tip number one. Tip number two is nutrition. As we get into the races, we start eating different food. Different food, I'm talking a lot of time, sports specific bars, sports specific gels. Although I'm not a massive advocate of eating these too often, they are in necessity at some times, especially in an event, you're going up a climb, full gas, very difficult to chew down, some homemade energy bar that you've made that has no moisture in it. Instead, we normally knock back a gel. Now, there's a gas stroke told to this. If our body is not used to taking in, that level of carbohydrates, ideal carbohydrate consumption, should be around 60 grams of carbohydrates per hour. If we're not used to taking 60 grams of carbohydrate per hour, if we're not used to these specific formulations that are in the gels and the bars, we will get gas stroke problems. So don't wait until the season starts. That's our plane around what what gels you're gonna use next season, what bars you're gonna use next season. Start early and start figuring out this stuff so you can make mistakes in training when no one's watching rather than make mistakes when you come to your target event. The last one is bike. If you're in a Western hemisphere country, the tradition is that we ride a shitty old bust up bike for half of the season, winter months, with the long mudguards on, the heavy bike with the long tube on the top tube, with the big bottles, with saddle bags. The bike is not very glamorous, but it's functional. It's function over form, this winter bike. But as we get into the summer, we start cracking out the race bike again with the race wheels. The problem is a race bike and a winter bike generally have quite different geometries. So you've put in the bulk of your kilometers on geometry A, your winter bike. Now you're gonna transition onto your race bike, which has geometry B, and you're gonna start opening the intensity of your training and you're gonna get injured. So my advice to you, and I've seen it stave off many of an injury, transition onto your summer bike, slowly and over a period of time. So start to transition in, use it, maybe put it on the Turbo China, use it once a week, maybe you bring it out on the weekend group ride. Sure, it's gonna mean a little bit extra climbing, but I promise you, it's gonna make your life a lot easier in the long run. That's it, roadman. That's my three tips for today. I will be back tomorrow, I have a super interest in interview to tomorrow. You're gonna love it. It's as I continue to expand our focus out of Entirely just world to our cycling guests because although they are brilliant. We loved having Jay on yesterday It's great to just get this round of opinion on what health happiness and longevity means to a variety of different health professionals So by that token, you're gonna love tomorrow's podcast. I'm not gonna tell you who it is right now I will say he has 500 tells and followers on Instagram So make sure you check back for that one. It's an epic. Chatty it Enrolled, man. Thank you for tuning in.
