Final Giro day and Patreon pitch
Roadman at stage 20 of the Jiro d'Italia. Let's cue that intro! The big question is this. How do we use cycling as a tool to improve our health, our happiness and our longevity? That is the question on this podcast will give you the answers. My name is Anthony Walsh and welcome to the Roadman Podcast. Hello man, welcome back it's stage 20 of the Giro, the Talia and it is my final day in Giro now. I'm packing up my shit and I'm going back to Dublin so I will definitely miss just the life of the pro, the sunshine, the beautiful roots and yeah hopefully it won't be too long before I get back out to Jerome again. Today was stage 20 and we finished up Alpa Mota and epically hard-looking climb. It was 4,200 meters of vertical today and they were all packed into the last 165 kilometers climbing and as I said that epic finale which we haven't finished up before up up Mota. And before I dive into the podcast let me just remind you gentle and know about Patreon as I've been giving all true to Jiro Bitalia daily podcasts. Just the podcast doesn't run off advertisement revenue. It runs off user generosity and you know there's a lot of good independent podcasts that are being crowded out of this space but a bigger more well-funded production is coming in. Really mainstream media coming into podcast internet land and the small creators are losing their voice and patreon is kind of a kickback and a revolt and a stand against that and it says you know there is a place for small independent creators and neutral unbiased opinions in natural cycling but in podcast land in general. So if you like the boy the price for point of beer once a month it down below it's patreon.com forward slash antony underscore wolch. So that is it for this year's road stages of the jiro d'etalia and that's also it for the roadman daily podcast because I'll be traveling tomorrow and I won't get a podcast out so unfortunately T-Tays are shit anyway and Bernal has it in the bag so unless there's something mental goes on you'll hear from me the day after Monday and we will do rest rest day round up on brainwashing indoctrinated what's that called when you become Stockholm syndrome when you become start identifying with your captures. That's what I feel like the sheer of the Thalia. The lads are fatigued, but I'm fatigued after three weeks of podcasting. So I'll get back on Monday for a bit of a round up, maybe take a couple of days off and then we'll get back into the daily, Rob Man podcast with the Rob Man Boits. And I've got some great guests lined up, brilliant writing in your own and solidifying relationships and got to meet some amazing people that I haven't before. So I'll be sure to get them on the podcast real soon. They're all household names that you will know. So today's stage at the Jiro was the last road stage and it is confirmed any else have fucking ruined cycling. It's I'm so conflicted because as you've heard me all through the Jiro, warming to burn out and I even love his interview afterwards where he's I don't want to say he's insecure but he has a little bit of doubt and I've seen press talking about this little bit of doubt as a weakness but for me it's not doubt is the you know it's a close cause into humility and humility is just such a beautiful trait especially in champions and that's why these top guys earned the money this is why Bernal is such a superstar because he does have doubt and top performers have doubt the same as mediocre performers do but why they attract that big salary and why they are champions is they keep They keep moving forward regardless of that doubt.
Caruso's breakthrough win on Alpe Motta
The doubt doesn't hold them back, the doubt doesn't stand in their way and that's what we've seen with Bernal. He just such a cool, calm, collected ride from Bernal. It was unbelievable. When the attacking starters and we're seeing quite a dangerous move because we've seen DSM for once since they moved over last year when they were Sunwebbed, they were dynamic and they were brilliant to watch and they were responsive and and they've been shit. And I don't know what's gone on this year. Slide change in person now, but they've raced very, very bad all season. And the first time we've seen them since last year's tour come out and really race. They entered a bottom of the last climb, they really hit us, or over the top of the second last climb, off to the center, they really hit us. They put any else on the back foot. Barday got us just rewards in the end. He moved up to top five, but he got clear with a brave Caruso. fast becoming one of my favorite riders in the bunch. Damiano Caruso and he got clear with his teammate Bilbao and Bardet, the two GC guys Bardet and Caruso leaned heavily on their teammates and Jay Hindley and Pail Bilbao established a gap. Then when it was time to ride the two lads Caruso and Bardet done a little bit of a two up. Eventually Caruso was too strong and rode away from Bardet. Caruso went on to have his first ever world tour victory solidifying his place second on the podium which is an amazing result. You have to remember he came in to ride support for a lander and he's walked away with second on the podium which is unbelievable. Bardet was rewarded for it as well because he moved into the top five but really the story was any else behind because they didn't panic. Kreluso second on GC is up the road. Bardae fifth on GC is up the road. Very very easy to panic in that situation but they didn't panic. They stayed together as a team even when I'm gonna sing Martin as his praise but it's a very Irish thing. If I'm gonna sing his praise on one hand I have to criticize him on the other. Like what is the fucking story he would descend them. He cost them at least 15-20 seconds. Whatever Martin has, getting dropped on those descents. Bernard wins the stage. Now, I know that makes no logical sense, because Martin has the one who told him up the climb. Martin has needs to improve his descendent. It was chronic. Getting dropped from his team at quite a pivotal moment in the race. It's unforgivable. It's all the fucking way up. And so Martin has gotten dropped on every descent. They have to wait for him But then when it does come time to do the business Martin has rode the entire last climb with Bernal in his way a bar one kilometer maybe so you've Bilbawa you've Caruso you've Jay Hindley You've birthday all up front and Martin has held him on his own. It was a Colombian show it was absolutely brilliant to watch and yeah Branau he really owes Martiness, he owes him more than a beer, he owes him half his prize money after that display. He's undoubtedly his most valuable lieutenant and what a shrewd sign of me, and he owes to sign Martiness in the off season. But we talked about this the other day, and he owes, they've done this for years, and Branau was moving away from it, where they roid from point A to point B as fast as they can and they just look at the power meter and I know some writers have been very critical this nee-blee, you know, it's the notable one who's been critical of it, saying they need to ban power meters from road races.
Ineos's clinical style and final TT preview
And I don't know if that answers it. It's any else a roid in a very clinical cold way and it's the clinical cold way where you used to see them roid in through Bradley Wiggins years, the Chris Froome years and it's back again and it's fucking terrible to watch. So, Bernal for me, he's too nice of a roider, he's too classy of a rider. He's a little bit of everything about me. Doesn't fit the Inio Small but I can see him slowly getting pulled into that Inio Small. Yeah it's shit to watch. It really is a hate watching Inio since they're like the Pantomine villain. Everybody seems to cheer against him but it's just because of that cold calculate away the road. But look they've pulled off another sure of the Talia Barnum disaster for a Barnal in the final time trial. So the final time trial it is at 21 kilometer sorry it's stage 21 it's a 30 kilometer time trial and the only bit to watch for me is the last 2k that's the only place I can see anybody potentially coming on dawn we have three 90 degree turns in the final kilometer and we all remember a few years ago Dennis Menchoff crashed in the final TT into Milan so hopefully there's no repeat of that. Bernal is a shit time trial as he ate his an equally shit time trial as Peruso is not a great time trialist either. None of the specialists are here. It's not like we're watching Pogachag and Rog Litch and Frum and Thomas. None of the specialists against the clock are in this. So we expect them all to be within a second of each other. I think Yates was taking basically a second per kilometer out of Bernal in previous time trials. So he's going to lose maybe 30 seconds. He's over two minutes buffer. So we don't expect any drama. Even a puncture, I think there's such gaps between the GC guys that even a puncture isn't going to really change things up. So that's a wrap for the Jure of the Talia Roadstages. I will be back on Monday and we'll do sort of a hollilog, low-logs, best bits of the Jure of the Talia. It's been an amazing Jure of the Talia. Definitely a low-loy off the top of my head for me was the Queen's Stage, fiasco with getting shortened, extreme weather protocol, poor TV reception and we'll dig into all that on Monday.
