Whole man today I want to talk about overnight success stories
The whole man today I want to talk about overnight success stories. Let's cue that intro! The big question is this. How do we use cycling as a tool to improve our health, our happiness, and our longevity? That is the question. This podcast will give you the answers. My name is Anthony Welch, and welcome to the Row Man Podcast. Roadman, welcome back to another Roadman Cyclone podcast. It's Monday again, I hope you all had a great weekend and I hope for your sake that everybody tuned into Paris, and Toronto, Adriatico. It's quite hard to figure out who is racing where when you're watching the two races simultaneously. Anyone else experiencing this problem that you're You're on a watching Terraino Adriatico and you're thinking, why isn't Roglic attacking right now? Surely Roglic has better legs than Bernal and then you're like, ah, Roglic is in the other race. Yeah, that's happened to me quite a bit. Dictonin II sensation on race is the last two days and I'm not being phenomenal. Roglic hitting the deck twice yesterday in Pari Nis and that crazy attack from Machuva Anderpol in Terraino Adriatico and when he was asked after the race why he went on such a crazy long distance solo attack. His answer was beautiful in its simplicity because I got called. It was like an attack in the Navin GP, you do to stay warm. I love that. And that's why Machu Vanderpaul is one of the favorite songs of the Rode Man podcast. Today I want to talk to you about Overnight Success and the idea of just building a longevity type perspective in here timeline that you're not going to achieve the destination straight away and that's okay and that's what I want to talk about and give you sort of some guidance on timelines you can expect before you start seeing progress in this beautiful sport of hers. Before I jump into that folks let me remind you about Patreon because Patreon is how we support this podcast. Patreon's the reason that it keeps going and Patreon's the reason that it keeps building. I'm going to talk about this in a minute but we're one year almost into the Roadman Podcast. I actually find out today because we must do a one year special and it's been brilliant but obviously it's not something that if I was looking at this through a purely financial lens that would be worth doing because it doesn't pay enough cash but I'm happy to keep it going and I really want to keep it going and that's kind of the focus of today's podcast. But before I jump into that just do head on over to patreon.com forward slash Anthony underscore Walsh and you can buy the price of a point of barrier to help keep this show on the road Okay, folks So you can think about this topic if you're getting into cycling and for me a lot of this is me getting into podcast And but if you're getting into anything like this any new pursuit You need to give yourself at least in my in my humble opinion, which is basically all you've tuned in for to disagree with or to agree with it, you need to give yourself a timeline of at least two years. Like if you want to learn a language, if you want to take up golf and get somewhat proficient in it, if you want to make progress in a sport, if you want to launch a podcast, the idea of overnight success, it's a myth. There's a book I love and we can argue the pros and cons of it on a different podcast but it's Machu Saweed, the book's called Bounce and it's the idea that you can achieve world class mastery with 10,000 hours.
I'm not sure if I fully buy into his entire thesis, but I definitely…
I'm not sure if I fully buy into his entire thesis, but I definitely know that giving yourself a timeline like two years, and that's sort of success horizon. Make sure you're not chasing after shiny projects all the time, that you're not like, oh, I'll start that. Oh, I'm going to take up what you did to. Oh, I'm going to take up golf. Oh, I'm going to start climbing. You need some sort of stickability for one of a better word for you to attain progress. In the rare cases that we have seen somebody be inverted commas and overnight success like Primos Roglich in Saitlin, he was an overnight success but he was really a decade in the making because he had a crossover from another sport. So he was honing a lot of those endurance-based skills in downhill skiing and then he stepped into Saitlin and it looks like he's an overnight success but he's not really. He's always been training a lot of the key building blocks you need for an endurance sport. A second thing that I think when you have this idea of, I'm going to give myself a two-year time, you know, horizon on this project. It means you can frame your progress in a lens. Like, if I've committed to podcasting for two years, do I really give a fuck if I get 20 downloads on my fourth episode? Do I really care if from six episodes in and I'm back to 25 downloads, I don't give a shit because I know I'm doing this for two years. So now I've switched my mind from, oh, I'm not good enough too. Can I be a little bit better than last week? Can I be a little bit better than yesterday? And so you really can't care about being 10 pounds overweight. If you're making progress, if you were 20 pounds overweight six months ago, you're making progress. And that's what we're looking for in all of this. We're looking for in your journey. We're looking for progress and not perfection. But the number one mistake that I see people making and the number one reason that they're quitting is comparison. Comparison of this L saying goes, it's the teeth of joy. But comparing yourself to someone else's finished product, you're comparing your work in progress to their finished product. Or actually, a lot of the time you're not even doing that, you're comparing yourself at the moment when you're still progressing to a moment in time for them. And we're getting this moment in time culture with social media because we're getting the perfect moment, the perfect picture of them on the bike at the perfect angle, looks like they're super lean where they're putting out like 450 watts for that brief five seconds and they've snapped this picture, showcasing the Garmin displaying 450 watts as they go up a climb. It's probably the, you know, the one minute power, not their 20 minute power, but because social media frames that moment in time for us, we go off and we compare it, moment in time where we are in the scale of progress at this moment and you go, oh, well, my threshold's nowhere near that. I don't look anywhere near as skinny as that. Therefore, I need to quit. I need to abandon ship. But if you conclude you're a failure based off this, you're concluding this. It's against a broken framework for judging success and failure. So, just pause and take a deep breath before you do that. Get started on the journey and And, you know, have that stick in power and say, whether I'm learning the language, whether I'm starting to cycle, whether I'm losing weight, whether you're starting a podcast, give yourself that two year horizon.
Two year horizon definitely does not guarantee a success, but what I…
The two year horizon definitely does not guarantee a success, but what I guarantee you, you will experience in that two year horizon, you will attain some amount of progress. You will not look back and wonder what regret and think, I wonder how good I could have been if I had a start at that. I wonder what it would be like if I had a start at 12 months ago, 18 months ago, two years ago. I also guarantee that you're going to have novel experiences and you're going to meet new friends and you're going to laugh along the way. And I guarantee if you stick with it, you're going to learn discipline and stick in power and turn your nose up and saying no to shiny object syndrome, which everybody gets stuck into, especially in that social media culture, which we highlighted in the podcast. So folks, there is no such thing as the overnight success. There's such thing as picking a project, starting now and committing to it for two years. Roman, welcome to another week. It's Patties Down Wednesday. Will I get a podcast out? Yeah, fuck it, I will get a podcast out actually of a whopper podcast plan for Wednesday. So scratch that. I have a class podcast. It's the first time I'm going to talk about in detail, COVID, lockdowns, restrictions, early roit, early draconian, where's the line between privacy and protecting public health, and because this is all starting to affect us and although I try very much stay in my narrow little wheelhouse of longevity, boil hacking, cycling, fitness, this is an issue that affects all of those now. So I I wanted to just guess a... It's not even getting my opinion down, because what I wanted to do is facilitate an open and informed debate from two experts. I'm not an expert on public health matters. I'm not a doctor. I'm not an academic in these areas. I've been frustrated with the lack of open and formed free debate from educated academics on both sides of the spectrum. Pro lockdown, Pro mask, Anti lockdown, Anti mask. I've been fascinated as to why this dialogue hasn't happened and that's my goal to facilitate that. So I have one side of the debate happening this Wednesday and then if as long as I can secure another guest who's going to take up the torch on the first side of the debate I will bring you that the following Wednesday and for the first time hopefully I'll have answered so many key questions on both side of that debate. So looking forward to that one but I'll be back tomorrow before that with another roadman cycle and podcast, look after yourselves. Hey everybody, it's Anthony again.
