Roadman today I want to talk to you about a strange concept
Roadman today I want to talk to you about a strange concept. I am inventing the world's first mobile cafe. What the hell am I talking about? Let's give that intro! The big question is this. How do we use cycling as a tool to improve our health, our happiness and our longevity? That is the question and this podcast will give you the answers. My name is Anthony Walsh and welcome to the Roadman podcast. Roadman, welcome back to another roadman, cycling podcast. Thanks for joining me again today. It's a little bit of an odd topic, but I know I'm in a safe space for you guys. I'm just super excited and I wanted to talk to someone about this about my mobile coffee shop on my bike. What the hell are you talking about, Anthony? What is this podcast about the level of intrigue and suspense is at all time high here on the roadman podcast and channel that injury against suspense and head over to patreon and kick this podcast off with that intrigue and suspense fulfilled by going and getting access to my secret podcast because the price of a beer once a month will get you access to that secret podcast. The link to get it it's in the boyo is patreon.com forward slash Anthony underscore watch. Okay, let's get into this one. It's a coffee shop on a bike. What What the hell is going on? Have you lost your mind? Are you going around town trying to make a few extra quid on the side, peddling coffee to office workers? No, that's, I may have misled you a little bit on this whole thing. So we are in Level 4 lockdown again here in Ireland. So that, what that means is all coffee shops are closed. It means that all non-essential shops are closed and it means that you can only leave your house for exercise up to a five kilometer radius. Now I most likely have an exemption from that five kilometer radius because I'm on the tandem trying for Tokyo so elite athletes have got an exemption from it. So I can try and outside the five kilometers which is great news. Not so good news is the lack of coffee shops and you know the coffee shop is such an amazing tradition in Saiklana, especially in the winter. And it's the destination that we aim for in every single spin. And I remember when I was over in Toronto, and I was trying to wear a buddy of mine who was pro. And this was the first time I really started to think about the coffee shop as nearly a psychological tool, because there's an argument that a ride isn't as good if you stop at the coffee shop because you're breaking up your endurance ride into instead of being three hours, it's two 90 minute efforts. But I've actually argued the opposite to that, that it means you're going to get three arrow rods done more frequently because the whole experience is more enjoyable because it's social because there's a bit of a reward. And I'll do a separate podcast on visualization and the power, or I'm sorry, reward schemes and the power of having a reward. And that's how we create these pathways to build successful habits. So you create a habit and you validate are verified that that's a good habit by rewarding yourself and that creates quite a powerful pathway.
Power of that coffee stop and having something to aim for is super…
So the power of that coffee stop and having something to aim for is super important, especially in the winter, and I know myself, I know how I operate and I know that my winter training will go so much better when I have this in place as a tool. Like if it's a six-hour ride that I'm doing, what I do is I look on the map and I pick a place that's three hours away and I go, that's where I'm going to stop for my coffee today. And having the power of that destination He pulls me to it. It also means in my mind, I actually don't feel like I'm doing a six hour ride. I feel like I'm doing a three hour ride, even though it's a six hour ride, because when I get there, I just got to get home. Like I got to get home anyway. There's not a choice. There's no willpower need, but you know if you're doing like loops around, you know, a 20k loop or something to get a 100k if through five and about every single time you have a choice, should I stop or should I do one more? You don't have that choice when your tree hours away. You need to get home. So there's a lot of powerful psychological stuff going on around the coffee shop and the coffee stop and this concept of it. So what I've decided to do is make my bike into a little mobile coffee unit. So I went online and I've ordered myself a nice little frame bag to sit under the cross bar, quite a big frame bag. I know if anyone follows me already, I'm already rocking the handle bar bag so that may or may not stay, we'll see. So the big frame bag what I'm holding it is you're probably thinking you've lost your mind I've got myself a little travel air press and I'm gonna stick that in there I'm gonna get myself a good Colombian coffee. I'm gonna get myself a little travel mug I might even go to full hog and get myself the scone the jam the border the cream and a little noise for myself So what I'm still gonna do if I'm doing a four-hour ride I'm gonna pick a destination. That's two hours away. I'm gonna ride there I'm gonna stop. I'm gonna pull out my air press my little flask of my hot water my nice Columbian coffee I'm gonna put it in and I'm gonna brew myself a hot tasty beverage on the side of the road like a complete mental patients So why am I telling you guys this story? Because when I look at traditional media as I do occasionally if I especially if I'm over my parents house and the news is constantly on What bared with negativity about how stuff has to be so bad, how there can never be a silver line, and how it's doom and gloom when you ask somebody how they're getting on and they respond by telling you the daily COVID numbers. That's a shithead space to be in, it's horrible narrative. And look, we only get one pass through this life, and to let something that we can't control, influence, error happiness, is just a horrible, horrible way to go through life. So, circumstances may be bad, But the 5km lockdown, now I know I'm exempt from that, but even if I wasn't, I'd still be doing this coffee stop concept.
Coffee shops might be closed and that's crap and it's disappointed…
The coffee shops might be closed and that's crap and it's disappointed because of all the reasons I highlighted that I love the coffee shop. But I get to choose how I respond to that. I can choose by bitching and moaning and sulking and saying, oh, you know what, I'm not going to ride my bike, I'm going to take an extended winter break. Or I can choose and come up with innovative solutions. Honestly, ordering that stuff now, it just puts such a smile on my face because I just think it's going to be such a crack. I've always loved camping and that almost, the lovely freedom you get from camping just feels like it's a little bit of a protest against the status quo. This again just feels like my little protest against coffee shops closing against businesses that are really struggling. a nice way to just make yourself feel good, tap into all those powerful psychological stuff and have a little bit of crack along the way. So I hope everybody's going to get super inventive, deterred in Ireland with their 5k lockdown and chatting to clients who are across the states and all around the world and places that don't have a lockdown. It really, really makes you appreciate what you have when you have it. So if you are in a country, it doesn't have restrictions at the moment. If you're earning a country that you can have access to coffee shops, restaurants, definitely smile, take advantage of them, look for the positives and get out and ride your bike.
