Roadman Cycling Club Is Born
Roadman, today I want to talk to you about the Burt of Roadman Cycling Club. Let's cue that intro! The big question is this. How do we use cycling as a tool to improve our health, our happiness and our longevity? That is the question on this podcast, we'll give you the answers. My name is Anthony Walsh and welcome to the Roadman Podcast. Rodman, welcome back to another Rodman Cycling Podcast. I hope you're well and truly settled in to 2022, settled back into work, sitting back into that training routine and that you've heeded my advice and you've cleared the cupboards of purged the cupboards. It's a strong word, isn't it purged? Purged the core material, tubular on, for air or roshe alcohol, all that junk. I want to talk to you today about a super exciting day in roadman. I love these little milestones and I do try and celebrate them because we're still a really small little operation. I do try and celebrate this and today is the birth of roadman, cycling club, roadman, CC. It's been the last 12 months of getting on and off calls from people saying, Well, can we join together as a cycling club? And the first sort of hint that maybe we would start to own that was a weekly Saturday group ride, which we've been running for the last 12 months. And it's been brilliant. It's been growing week on week, and it's brilliant to watch that. And I'll talk about that in a second. But now we're formalizing the whole thing. We're affiliated with Cycling Ireland. Roadman Cycling Club is born. I really had this vision to bring together a community of like-minded people who were just passionate about the sport that we all love and give people an opportunity to make new friends, learn from experienced roiders, to share their favorite training routes, training tips and just create a new social group for themselves. The group will be based every Saturday out of Clontarth and we have a weekly group ride from Clontarth every Saturday and it caters for all levels and I literally mean all levels. It was one of the things that really annoyed me about group rides and kind of forced my hand in setting up this group right. I had a chance to, you know, ride with groups all around the country and the group right is broken. It's broken in Ireland. It's broken in the UK. It's broken in Canada and America. It's completely falling apart. There's no hierarchy is structure in the group right. No, there's no group leader. No one listens to a person. It's turned into this Darwinian survival of the fittest where the strong prey on the weak. And that invert us what the group ride should be about the group right should be in inclusive learning environment Where the strong they mentored a week and they showed them okay. Here's this is the shelter This is when you eat. This is how you stand up without pushing your bike back This is how you go around a corner without your cranks touching. This is how you ride shoulder to shoulder This is how we do a pace line understanding wind directions It's every single experience the good rider in the group was once also the beginner in the group who was looking for advice and that's how they ascended to their position as the better writer in the group. But we've a weird broken dynamic and you can go start blaming Zwift, start blaming Strava.
Learning From Better Riders
But regardless of who you blame, the fact is we've a broken dynamic because now when better writers, when writers ascend to that position of group leader or you know local hero in the group, they have forgot to put a hand down and pull Reuters below them up. They've decided instead to cast aspersions down and pejorative tags like you know Fred, A4 like when that shouldn't be the case because everyone started there and the only way we got a little bit better was learning from those around us and I could still remember my early group right experiences and they were such amazing group right experiences. I was out with Sword Cycling Club in Dublin and one of the best writers of the last few generations, Sean Lally was in that group and although I didn't have a super chatty relationship with him, I watched every single thing that Sean Lally do on every single group right. I watched what he wore, I watched what time he showed up at, I watched how he went around corners, when he ate, when he drank, every single thing he watched and I'd come home in the evening and I take notes every evening and that's how I learned. I learned by watching the better Reuters. We're lucky enough now that we have Sean Lally, Roy and with our roadman Saturday group, but also Sean Lally's son who has immensely experienced himself riding with the Saturday group and also Sean Lally's grandson riding with the Saturday group. So we have three generations at one of the most famous cyclone families in Ireland in the Saturdays being which is absolutely amazing for anyone that's coming into the roadman environment to learn from the likes of these guys. But also we've such a mix, something else that really infuriated me about clubs is they're so ability based. It's you turn up to a group and it's all the A4s together. It's all the A3s together. It's all the A2s together. But if it's all the A4s together or all the sport heave guys together, who do you learn from? So with the romance group, it's a veritable mixing pot of writers who have been pro, who've won some of the biggest races in Ireland and abroad and guys who are guys and girls literally go on their first group right and we make it work it's fun it's social so I am super excited to kick that off and formally welcome you guys to join Roadman CC so if you're a cycling Ireland member I'm going to give you a link sorry regardless of your cycling Ireland member if you want to race in Ireland I'll be affiliated with Roadman you will need to be a cycling Ireland member you'll need to be a so I can learn a member regardless. And then the link for joining Roadman CC, it's just roadmancycling.com forward slash Roadman CC, all one word, and I'm gonna put the link down below for this. So we're gonna ride a full domestic recycling calendar, expect we'll have representation in all the categories this year. So you're gonna have a group of friends traveling to every race which you, but also a group of like-minded people who are just chilled out, like anyone who's ridden with the group, It's such a wonderful group of humans at the moment and there's no egos, it's just brilliant to be around. But also I think which is unique for a cycling club, we're going to have an international calendar where we're going to have representation in some of those biggest events abroad.
Membership Perks and Kit Launch
So whether you're traveling across to the New Yorka tree you want to, the whole fruit or you're more gravel and off road as you're taking the track and your own, I'm like you're taking, we're going to have roadmen at all these events. This year and into the coming years also exploring stage races and stuff. super early but it's brilliantly exciting so it's a great chance to get involved at a really early stage of this project. The kit is dropping as well and that's in the link to roman.com forward slash romancc. There's a link to the kit anyone seen the photo shoots from Jerome a couple of weeks ago. The kit is fresh. The design on the kit is mint. It looks absolutely lovely. It's a Navy and pink and it's just, yeah, I just love it. It's show-stopping. So I'm super excited to formally welcome you all to Roadman CC and I look forward to Ruben Shoulders, which on the Saturday group, right? Every Saturday, you know, there's a host of benefits you're gonna give when you join Roadman CC and we're gonna keep adding to this.
