Roadman today we're going to talk about lifestyle redesign
Roadman today we're going to talk about lifestyle redesign. How to perform a system reset. Control alt delete. Let's cue that intro. The big question is this. How do we use cycling as a tool to improve our health, our happiness and our longevity? That is the question and this podcast will give you the answers. My name is Anthony Walsh and welcome to the Roadman Podcast. Roadman welcome back roadman to another roadman cycling podcast today is an episode that's it's super important to me it's something that I use this is a tool I use all the time to carve out some extra happiness in my life and with the tagline for this podcast held happiness and longevity and this being such a crucial tool in my happiness toolbox happiness toolbox I don't know what else is in happiness toolbox It's just clown costumes and like sheets of Christmas cracker jokes. It's amazing. But seriously, this is such a powerful tool for me and it's really has been transformative for me in so many ways. So today I wanted to share with you a little bit before I do talk to you about this tool for lifestyle redesign. You're tired I was going to say go check out Patreon and I am because this podcast, it's entirely funded by Patreon and I'd ask you to buy me a point of beer once and wanted to fund this podcast. But this is a section of the podcast as well that I'm going to use as a brief little public service announcement because I've such an exciting piece of news. I've been waiting for about two weeks to tell you guys this but I couldn't let the card out of the bag various contractual commitments meant I could only talk about it now. But we're hosting the first ever roadman virtual performance summit. So over two days on the 8th and 9th of September, I'm going to speak with 30 of the leading experts in fitness in the entire world. And the good news is I want you guys to join me and listen into these conversations completely free of charge from the comfort of your own home. That's kind of the virtual summit gig, what it is, you get to listen in at home, you get a link, you tune in, you watch me chatting to some of the best minds in the world. So that was my goal, it was to bring together these best minds in the world and get them to share their secrets with me, secrets for a lot of the stuff we've been doing. believe and stand for in this podcast like boyohacking your physiology, melting body fat and smashing dull cycling goals. So guys and girls, if you want to join me and you want to learn their secrets, it's going to be super easy to register for your free ticket. Just head over to www.roadmansummit.com forward slash free. So it's roadmansummit.com forward slash free F or E.E. charge, stick in your email address, you're going to email a link and on the 8th and 9th of December you're going to have access as I pick the brain of 30 of the leading minds in cycling. It's epic, the lineup is brilliant. I'm going to start drip feeding, you know, some little hints as to who I have on us and it's some guys I've had on the podcast as guests before and I always wanted an opportunity to go a little bit deeper with them. Yanny Blackovich is one of them I'm super excited about and he's confirmed for the the roadman summit. But the idea is I'm going to tackle this idea of performance from a number of different angles like 30 people from multi-disciplinary, from dieticians to sports, psychologists to world tour riders all the way around that spectrum. It's going to be absolutely epic. Okay guys, let's get into today's topic because I know that's what you all came to listen to. So it's how we perform a little bit of a system reset and a little bit of this is gold, but it's not goals and the fluffy, you know, let's all do smart goals, specific and measurable, like, I hate that shit, it's nonsense. This is something more tangible and I think goals are super important. Do you ever remember watching Alison Wonderland back in the day and it was that quote that we stuck on my head and I had to be something my bed, he's not a kid, I think I was like in fourth or fifth class and I had this written out beside my bed and it's a quote from Alison Wonderland where it's, would you tell me please which way I ought to go from here.
Depends a good deal on where you want to get this at the cat
Well that depends a good deal on where you want to get this at the cat. It don't matter much where said Alice, then it doesn't matter which way you go said the cat. I love that. It's brilliant. That's obviously Lewis Carroll's scare a quote from Alice in Wonderland. But it's brilliant because it's the idea of we need to set goals or we're just this aimless ship that leaves port with no destination or a flight that the parts double on which you're not entirely sure where it's going and you think you're on the exotic holiday and then you end up back in Shannon. So one of the super important kind of preface to this from our set in goals is something I found through the years. There is way less competition for unrealistic goals. 99.9% of people in the world want to be realistic. They want to aim for the middle. They want the safe job, the easy college course. They want to date the middle of the road girl. is way way less competition for the very best. It's way easier to start a company where you raise huge amounts of cash than a small amount of cash. It's way easier to go into a bar and pick up one girl who's a 10, then try and pick up two or three girls who are six or seven because everybody sees themselves as, you know, I better not strive too high here. I'll kind of go middle of the road with all my decisions and it means there's just so much less competition for the extremes. So that's something to bear in mind when I get into this and ask you to start setting these little dream line type targets that we're going to talk about. And the next kind of precondition to this is when you think about our goal in this is health, happiness and longevity. The opposite to sadness when you think about it, the opposite the sadness is in happiness because happiness is intangible. The opposite to sadness is boredom. It's boredom. And I remember here in Tim Ferriss speaking about this in his book, which was so influential on me back in the day for our work week, boredom. So we need to strive to alleviate boredom, not strive for something abstract like happiness. So it's that quote that I love and I say it time and time again on this podcast from Helen Keller. Life is a daring adventure or nothing at all. And when you get that in and you're trying to stave off boredom, now all of a sudden, now you have the answer, you have the key, it's adventure. That's what we're looking for. We're all looking for adventure. So what I do is I set a tree month timeline. And this is very personal because I know for each person it'll differ. For me, if I set something that's 12 months off in the distance, it's too short to make it actionable straight away. So I like to break it down into quarters. Tree month timelines work perfect for me. Now I'll do a list and I'll typically list at least three things in my trainman timeline. Things I dream of being. So these are not material ones. These are not things I dream of having. It's not I'm looking for a Ferrari or a Porsche 911. I'm looking things I'm being. So recent examples that I've used are I dreamed of being a podcaster. Another one could be I dream of being an Olympian. I dream of being fluent in Spanish. I dream of being a good cook. I dream of being more content. I dream of being financially free. Now here's the magic because what you need to do, so you pick your tray. So for me, I pick, you know, I'm going to dream. I'll actually use ones that I used. So I dream, I'd the podcaster, I'd the Olympian, and I'd more content. This is from about two quarters ago for me. So this is the magic. This is the bit now to pay attention to because you take what you dream of being and now change it from something that you're being into something that you're doing to make it actionable. So I dream of being a podcaster. abstract. That's like I dream of being happy. Now when we change podcaster from a being into a doing, the doing looks like I will record five podcast episodes a week for the next year. That changes the doing, that changes the being to the doing.
If you're if you picked I want to be fluent in Spanish, an example…
If you're if you picked I want to be fluent in Spanish, an example would be have a 10 minute conversation with a Spanish coworker. You dream of being a great cook. Turn it into a doing by I'll cook Christmas dinner from scratch for my entire family this year to get where I'm gone. So I dream of being more content. So my doing becomes a meditate daily for 10 minutes each morning. I will write down trainings that I'm grateful for each evening. I will do a board's eye general's tent overview of my day and see where I could have improved it more. I dreamed of being an Olympian, so now change it into a doing. What's my doing? I'm gonna train every single day, I'm gonna look at the criteria for qualification for your Olympics on the tandem, and I'm gonna go and do it. And the Tim Ferriss bit that I absolutely love from this whole test is he has a sanity check and this I just I just flat out stole his sanity check. I use this as my sanity check. He has this idea of the fat bald guy in the red convertible BMW and he said he checks in with a body in his body checks in with him every now and then I just kind of check in myself and I go are you becoming a fat bald middle-aged dude in a red convertible BMW? Because none of us want that. That's the guy we look at and go oh what the fuck and for me when I look at that I see somebody in it I see people you know that aren't massively happy in their lives and they try and buy material goods to project happiness, to project a veneer of happiness or accomplishment or success. And they try and wallpaper over cracks in their own life, cracks of esteem, cracks of direction, cracks of purpose, cracks of self-confidence. For me, that's what the bald fat dude in the convertible red BMW represents and I never want to be that dude. So how do I stave that off? It's not It's not strive for the abstract happiness. It's strive for the tangible adventure. So I dream of being changed up into doing. You can extend this out and you can make another list over the three months and you can add in actual doing ones. I dream of going to Bali. I dream of but make them actionable, make them doing and then break it down and go, what action am I going to do right now to get this task started? It could be a phone call, it could be an email but start right now. If you're one is owner learn Spanish, download dual lingo right now, commit to watching TV shows on Netflix only in Spanish. Make it actionable right now. Guys, that's a super important topic for me because a lot of the training stuff I talk about and it's stuff maybe I've actioned in the past and I've used and I've moved away from it. But this is something that keeps my life together. This sanity checks me, make sure I'm going in the right direction all the time. and above all that I'm having an adventure along the way because as we said life is a daring adventure or a notion at all.
