If your goal is cardiovascular health — a strong heart, clear arteries, good blood pressure — cycling replaces running with no meaningful trade-off. The VO2max improvements are equivalent, the cardiovascular disease risk reduction is equivalent, and the calorie expenditure per unit of perceived effort is comparable. The research is unambiguous on this.

Where cycling falls short is bone health. Running's impact forces stimulate bone formation through mechanotransduction — a signal that cycling's low-impact, concentric loading does not provide. Long-term cyclists who do no weight-bearing exercise can develop lower bone density than matched sedentary controls, which is a concern for masters athletes.

The practical answer: cycling replaces running for heart and lung fitness, but you should add 2-3 sessions per week of weight-bearing exercise — walking, stair climbing, resistance training — to maintain bone density. With that addition, you lose nothing from the switch and gain substantially lower injury risk.

  3. Use cycling for injury recovery from running

    Cycling maintains cardiovascular fitness during running injury layoffs. Match the heart rate zones you would use for running — zone 2 cycling at the same heart rate provides a comparable aerobic stimulus without impact.

Will cycling make me a slower runner?

Can I train for a marathon on a bike?

Is cycling or running better for weight loss?
