Disc brake problems have a single root cause 90% of the time: contamination. Oil on the rotor or pads, whether from fingertips, chain lube overspray, or a dirty rag. The fix is prevention — handle rotors with clean gloves, cover brakes when spraying anything on the bike, and clean rotors with isopropyl alcohol if you suspect contamination.
The second most common issue is pad wear. Unlike rim brakes where pad wear is visible at a glance, disc pads are hidden inside the calliper. Get into the habit of checking pad thickness every month by removing the wheel and peering into the calliper slot. Pads wear faster in wet conditions — winter riders may go through a set every 1,000-2,000km.

Disc brake contamination is the number one complaint we see in workshop settings, and it is almost always user-caused. The oils in human skin are sufficient to contaminate a rotor surface. Establishing the habit of never touching rotor faces — and using isopropyl alcohol for cleaning rather than general-purpose cleaners — eliminates the majority of disc brake noise and performance issues.

Clean rotors with isopropyl alcohol after every wash
After washing your bike, spray or wipe each rotor with isopropyl alcohol (90%+ concentration) and a clean, lint-free cloth. This removes any soap residue or oils that may have transferred during washing. Keep a dedicated bottle of isopropyl and a clean microfibre cloth in your maintenance kit specifically for rotors.
Check pad thickness monthly and replace at 1.5mm
Remove the front wheel and look into the calliper from the side. The friction material (dark coloured) sits on a metal backing plate. New pads have 3-4mm of material. Replace when it reaches 1.5mm or less. Most pads can be removed without tools — they slide out on a retaining pin. Always replace pads in pairs.
Bed in new pads properly before riding hard
With new pads fitted, perform 20-30 stops from moderate speed (20-25 km/h), applying firm but not locked-up braking. This builds a transfer layer of pad material on the rotor surface, creating consistent friction. Skipping this step causes inconsistent braking and premature pad glazing. You will feel the braking power increase noticeably through the bedding-in process.

FIXWD-40 and most spray cleaners leave a residue that contaminates the braking surface. Use only isopropyl alcohol (90%+) or a dedicated disc brake cleaner. These evaporate cleanly without residue.
MISTAKESqueezing brake levers when the wheel is removed.
FIXWithout the rotor between them, hydraulic pistons can push out too far and the pads close together. Insert a pad spacer or a folded piece of cardboard whenever you remove a wheel. If the pistons have closed, carefully push them back with a clean, flat plastic tool — never a metal screwdriver.
MISTAKEIgnoring a spongy brake lever until it becomes dangerous.
FIXA spongy lever means air has entered the hydraulic system. This reduces braking force and can worsen suddenly. Bleed the brakes promptly using the correct fluid (DOT fluid for SRAM/TRP, mineral oil for Shimano — they are not interchangeable). If you are not comfortable bleeding brakes, a bike shop will do it for £20-40 per brake.
