Stiff shoes are the most cost-effective power upgrade in cycling after a bike fit. But the cycling industry has pushed the stiffness arms race to a point where the stiffest shoes can actually cause problems for many riders.

  2. Invest in custom or quality aftermarket insoles

    Replace the flat insoles that come with most cycling shoes with supportive insoles that match your arch type. Options range from heat-mouldable insoles (Specialized BG, Solestar) to fully custom orthotics from a podiatrist. Proper arch support distributes pedal force across the entire foot rather than concentrating it on the metatarsal heads.

  3. Monitor for forefoot numbness and adjust if necessary

    If you experience tingling or numbness in the forefoot after 60-90 minutes of riding, the stiffness-pressure combination needs adjusting. Try loosening the forefoot closure, adding a metatarsal button to your insole, or moving cleats 2-3 mm rearward.
