Testosterone decline is real, but it is not the cliff-edge that the men's health industry would have you believe. Plenty of riders in their 50s and 60s perform at levels that would embarrass 30-year-olds, because testosterone is one factor among many — and the ones you can control (sleep, stress, body composition, training structure) have an outsized impact on the rate of decline.

The biggest testosterone killer for masters cyclists is not age — it is chronic sleep deprivation and relentless high-volume training without adequate recovery. You cannot out-train biology. A masters rider who sleeps 7-8 hours, manages stress, and structures training with proper recovery blocks will maintain higher testosterone levels than a sleep-deprived rider doing twice the volume.

    Testosterone decline in male athletes is heavily modulated by training stress and recovery quality. Chronic overtraining and caloric restriction — common in endurance athletes — can suppress testosterone well below age-predicted levels. Prioritising sleep, maintaining adequate caloric intake (particularly avoiding chronic low energy availability), and including rest days are the most effective non-pharmacological strategies for supporting hormonal health in ageing male athletes.

  1. Prioritise sleep as the primary hormonal intervention

    Testosterone production peaks during deep sleep. Aim for 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep with consistent bed and wake times. Reduce screen exposure in the hour before bed, keep the bedroom cool (16-18°C), and avoid caffeine after early afternoon. This single change has a larger effect on testosterone levels than any legal supplement.

  2. Structure training to avoid chronic overreaching

    Masters riders need more recovery between hard sessions than younger athletes. Limit high-intensity sessions to 2-3 per week with at least 48 hours between them. Schedule a recovery week every third week rather than every fourth. Monitor morning resting heart rate and HRV — a sustained elevation in resting HR or drop in HRV signals that training load is suppressing recovery.

  3. Maintain body composition without extreme caloric restriction

    Both excess body fat and very low body fat suppress testosterone. Aim for a body fat percentage of 12-20%. Avoid prolonged caloric deficits of more than 300-500 calories per day — aggressive dieting suppresses testosterone rapidly. If you need to lose weight, do so gradually during the base phase and return to maintenance calories during build and race phases.

Should I get my testosterone levels tested?
A baseline blood test through your GP is reasonable for men over 40, particularly if you are experiencing fatigue, persistent poor recovery, low motivation, or significant performance decline. A total testosterone and free testosterone measurement gives you a data point. Note that levels fluctuate throughout the day — morning blood draws give the most accurate reading. Interpret results with a doctor, not Dr Google.
Does cycling itself lower testosterone?
Chronic high-volume endurance training can transiently suppress testosterone, particularly when combined with caloric restriction. This is not specific to cycling — any endurance sport with high training loads shows the same pattern. The effect is reversible with recovery. Moderate training volumes (8-12 hours per week) with adequate fuelling and recovery do not chronically suppress testosterone.
At what age should I worry about testosterone decline?
Clinically significant decline typically manifests after 45-50, though individual variation is enormous. If you are performing well, recovering adequately, and feeling good, age alone is not a reason to worry. If you notice a cluster of symptoms — persistent fatigue, declining performance despite good training, reduced motivation, and slow recovery — a blood test is worthwhile regardless of age.
