The question is not really whether you need a power meter — it is when. If you are brand new to cycling and still building the habit of riding regularly, a power meter is unnecessary. Ride by feel, enjoy the bike, and learn what different efforts feel like. Heart rate gives you enough data to train at easy and moderate intensities. But the moment you want to progress beyond just riding — when you want to know your FTP, set training zones, track whether you are getting stronger, or pace a time trial or sportive properly — a power meter changes everything.

Heart rate is a response signal — it tells you how your body is reacting, not what you are producing. On a hot day, your heart rate might be 150 bpm at 180 watts. On a cool day, the same 180 watts might only push heart rate to 135. Heart rate is influenced by caffeine, sleep, stress, and temperature. Power is influenced by how hard you push the pedals. The practical argument is simple: a power meter costs less than a set of mid-range wheels and delivers far more value. Wheels might save you 5-10 watts on the flat if you are lucky. That maths is not close. When you are ready to train with intention, buy the power meter before you buy the wheels.

    Use a heart rate monitor and perceived effort for Zone 2 rides and easy-moderate training. Learn what different effort levels feel like. This costs little and builds the awareness you will pair with power data later.

  2. Buy a power meter when you want to train with structure

    When you reach the point of wanting to test FTP, set zones, follow a structured plan, or pace events properly, invest in a power meter. Pedal-based or crank-arm options are the most versatile because they work across multiple bikes. Hub-based power meters lock you to one wheel.

  3. Use power to anchor all training decisions

    Once you have power data: test FTP every 6-8 weeks, set zones from the result, prescribe every session by power zone, and track TSS (Training Stress Score) to manage training load. Use heart rate as a secondary check — if power is normal but heart rate is elevated, you may be fatigued or fighting illness.

What type of power meter should I buy?
For most riders, a single-sided crank-arm power meter offers the best value — it measures one leg and doubles the number, which is accurate enough for training. Pedal-based meters (Garmin Rally, Favero Assioma) are versatile because they transfer between bikes easily. Spider-based meters are the most accurate but typically the most expensive.
Can I use a smart trainer instead of an on-bike power meter?
A smart trainer provides accurate power indoors, which is useful for indoor training. But it does not help you on the road. If you train mostly indoors, a smart trainer may be sufficient. If you ride outdoors and want to pace efforts, track outdoor FTP, or train by zones on the road, you need an on-bike meter.
Is heart rate training completely useless without power?
Not at all. Heart rate is a valid training metric for Zone 2 and easy endurance riding, where the lag does not matter much. It falls short for intervals (too slow to respond), pacing (too variable day-to-day), and fatigue monitoring (influenced by too many non-training factors). Heart rate is a good starter metric; power is the upgrade.
How accurate does a power meter need to be?
Within 2% is the standard for reputable brands. More important than absolute accuracy is consistency — your power meter should give you the same reading at the same effort every time. Calibrate before rides (zero offset) and the relative accuracy session-to-session will be solid.
Will a power meter make me faster?
A power meter does not make you faster by itself — it gives you the data to train smarter, which makes you faster. It shows you whether your intervals are at the right intensity, whether your FTP is improving, and whether you are pacing events properly. The gains come from using the data, not from owning the device.
At what level should a cyclist get a power meter?
There is no strict level requirement. The inflection point is when you shift from riding for fun to riding with a training goal — wanting to raise FTP, complete a sportive faster, or follow a structured plan. For most riders, that happens 6-18 months into regular cycling. If you are asking the question, you are probably ready.
