WHO THIS IS FOR
IS THIS YOU?
The rider buying their first bike computer
You want to know which platform to invest in.
The rider considering switching
You are on one platform and wondering if the other is better.
THE ROADMAN VIEW
The Roadman view
Anthony uses both and his view is practical: the computer that records your data and stays charged is the right one for you. The internet treats this as a tribal identity — you are a Garmin person or a Wahoo person — but the reality is that both make excellent bike computers that do the same core job. Record power, heart rate, speed, cadence. Display it on screen. Upload it to Strava. Done.
Where they differ is philosophy. Garmin is a feature-first company. Their head units can display dozens of data fields, create routes on-device, pair with their watch, radar, lights, and power meter ecosystem, and analyse your training within the Garmin Connect app. It is a deep platform — and it takes time to set up properly. Wahoo took the opposite approach: make it simple, make it fast, configure it from your phone, and get out of the way. The trade-off is fewer features and a smaller hardware ecosystem.
For most cyclists, the question is: do you want more control and data (Garmin), or do you want something that works out of the box with minimum fuss (Wahoo)? Both are good answers. Neither is wrong.
EXPERT EVIDENCE
WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY
- Cycling tech comparison — Roadman podcastAs discussed across cycling tech episodes
The difference between Garmin and Wahoo is less about data accuracy — both are within 1-2% on the same sensors — and more about how you interact with the data. Garmin gives you more control; Wahoo gives you less to think about. Neither is objectively better.
PRACTICAL APPLICATION
DO THIS WEEK
Assess your needs honestly
If you want turn-by-turn navigation, on-device route creation, and a connected ecosystem of devices, Garmin is the stronger platform. If you want a computer you can set up in 10 minutes and not think about again, Wahoo is the cleaner option.
Check compatibility with your existing kit
If you already own a Garmin watch, Garmin radar, or Garmin power meter, staying in the Garmin ecosystem adds value. If you use a third-party power meter and a separate watch, either platform works equally well.
Try before committing if possible
Borrow a friend's unit for a ride or visit a shop with demo models. The interface feel — how quickly you can find the screen you want mid-ride — matters more than spec-sheet features you may never use.
COMMON MISTAKES
WHAT CYCLISTS GET WRONG
MISTAKEChoosing based on what your riding group uses.
FIXYour bike computer does not need to match your friends' computers. Choose based on your needs, not peer pressure.
MISTAKEBuying the top-of-the-line model when a mid-range would suffice.
FIXThe Garmin Edge 540 and Wahoo ELEMNT BOLT cover everything most amateurs need. The flagship models add features that matter to pros and data obsessives.
MISTAKENot setting up data screens before the first ride.
FIXSpend 15 minutes configuring your data screens to show the fields you actually use — power, heart rate, cadence, distance. The default layouts are rarely optimal.
