The biggest mistake road cyclists make when transitioning to gravel is assuming it is just road riding on different tyres. It is not. The fitness demands are meaningfully different. On the road, you can hold a steady 250 watts for an hour and that is a useful predictor of performance. On gravel, your power trace looks like a heart monitor — 400 watts up a rocky climb, 100 watts across a rutted fire road, 350 watts surging out of a loose corner. Your body needs to handle those repeated surges without blowing up.

The other thing road cyclists underestimate is how much time-in-saddle matters for gravel. Most gravel events are 4-10 hours, and the fatigue profile is completely different from a 3-hour road race. Your training needs to include long rides — 5-6 hours in the saddle — because the limiting factor in most gravel events is not peak power, it is the ability to keep producing moderate power after hour five when your back aches, your hands are numb, and every bump rattles your fillings.

    The biggest difference between road and gravel fitness is the ability to recover from repeated high-power surges while maintaining a baseline effort. In a gravel race, you might put out 150% of FTP for 90 seconds on a technical climb, then need to recover while still riding at 70% FTP on rough terrain. Training that specific recovery capacity is what separates gravel racers from road racers on dirt.

  1. Add muscular endurance intervals at low cadence

    Include one session per week of 3x10 minutes at 85-95% FTP with cadence locked to 55-65 rpm. This simulates grinding up loose climbs where high cadence is impossible. Rest 5 minutes between efforts. Build to 3x15 minutes over 6 weeks.

  2. Include variable-power interval sessions

    Ride 60-90 minute sessions alternating 30 seconds at 130-150% FTP with 90 seconds at 60% FTP, repeated 15-20 times. This mimics the surge-recover-surge pattern of gravel racing and trains your body to clear lactate while maintaining forward progress.

  3. Practise technical skills on off-road terrain weekly

    Spend 1-2 hours per week on actual gravel, fire roads, or bridleways working on cornering on loose surfaces, choosing lines through ruts, and descending confidently. These skills do not transfer from road riding and require deliberate practice.

Do I need a separate power meter for gravel?
A power meter is useful for gravel training but less critical during racing, where terrain forces variable pacing. Pedal-based or crank-based power meters transfer between bikes. For racing, RPE (rate of perceived exertion) is often more practical than chasing numbers on rough terrain.
How much does tyre pressure affect gravel performance?
Significantly. Running 3-5 psi too high on gravel increases vibration fatigue and reduces traction, costing time on every corner and climb. Use a tyre pressure calculator specific to gravel (accounting for tyre width, rider weight, and surface) and experiment in training.
Can road FTP translate directly to gravel performance?
Partially. Your road FTP provides an aerobic ceiling, but gravel performance depends more on repeatability of efforts and fatigue resistance over long durations. A rider with a lower FTP but better muscular endurance and technical skills will often beat a stronger road rider on gravel.
