There is a widespread belief that you need to ride the full event distance in training. You do not. If your target is a 100-mile sportive, your longest training ride should peak at 80-85 miles, three weeks before the event. The remaining distance is covered by taper freshness, adrenaline, and group riding. Riding the full distance in training costs you a week of recovery without proportional fitness gain.

For riders without a specific event target, the weekly long ride sweet spot is two to three hours. This duration is long enough to build mitochondrial density, fat oxidation capacity, and cardiovascular endurance. Beyond three hours, you are burning through glycogen stores, accumulating muscular damage, and adding recovery days that eat into your training week.

The exception is if you specifically race or target events of five or more hours. In that case, occasional rides of four to five hours train your fuelling strategy, saddle tolerance, and mental resilience at duration. But even then, the weekly long ride should only reach this duration two to three times in a training block, not every weekend.

    The long ride should be at zone 2 intensity — 55-75% of FTP, conversational pace. Riding the long ride too hard turns it into a threshold session that requires significantly more recovery and provides less aerobic base-building stimulus.

    If a three-hour long ride is not possible, two 90-minute rides provide similar aerobic benefit. Total weekly volume matters more than the duration of any single session, particularly for general fitness goals.
