Calorie burn from cycling is higher than most people expect, which is part of why the sport is so effective for body composition. A two-hour ride at moderate pace can burn 1,000-1,200 kcal — the equivalent of skipping lunch entirely. The problem is that most estimates from apps and watches are wildly inaccurate.
If you have a power meter, use it. The kilojoule output from your ride is almost identical to the kilocalorie expenditure because human efficiency sits around 20-25%. A ride that reads 800kJ on your head unit burned approximately 800 kcal. Everything else — heart rate estimates, speed-based calculators — is a rough guess at best.

Estimate without power data
Multiply your body weight in kg by the number of hours ridden, then multiply by an intensity factor: 6-8 for easy riding, 8-10 for moderate, 10-13 for hard. Example: 75kg x 2 hours x 8 = 1,200 kcal for a moderate 2-hour ride.
Use calorie data for recovery fuelling
After a ride that burned 1,000+ kcal, aim to replace 50-60% of that within 2 hours through a meal containing carbohydrate and protein. A 4:1 carb-to-protein ratio supports glycogen replenishment and muscle repair.
