Weight and climbing is the topic that produces the most magical thinking in amateur cycling. Riders will spend a thousand pounds on a carbon seatpost to save 80 grams while carrying three kilograms of body fat they could address through nutrition. But the reverse is equally problematic — riders who starve themselves to hit a number on the scales and then cannot hold power because they are glycogen-depleted and hormonally wrecked.

The right way to think about it is watts per kilogram, which means you have two levers. If you are carrying genuine excess body fat, losing weight while maintaining training load is the easiest W/kg gain available to you. If you are already lean, the lever shifts to building more power because the weight side has diminishing and eventually negative returns.

    The performance benefit of weight loss in cycling is non-linear. The first few kilograms of genuine fat loss at maintained power provide a clear climbing benefit. Beyond that, further loss risks impairing immune function, reducing training quality, and compromising hormonal health — all of which reduce performance more than the lighter weight improves it.

  1. Calculate your current W/kg

    Divide your FTP by your body weight in kilograms. Track this monthly. If it is trending upward, you are heading in the right direction regardless of which side of the ratio moved.

  2. Assess whether weight loss is appropriate

    If your body fat is above 15-18% (male) or 22-28% (female), there is likely room to improve W/kg through body composition changes alongside training. If you are already within those ranges, the priority shifts to building power.

  3. Lose weight during base phase, not race season

    A modest calorie deficit of 300-500 kcal per day during lower-intensity training blocks is sustainable. Do not attempt weight loss during high-intensity training phases — the reduced fuel availability will compromise your interval quality and recovery.

How much time does 1 kg save on a big climb?
On a typical 7-8% gradient at amateur power, roughly 20-30 seconds per 10 km of climbing. On a 20 km Alpine climb, that is 40-60 seconds per kilogram — meaningful but not transformative for a single kilogram.
Is bike weight or body weight more important?
Body weight, by a large margin. Your bike weighs 7-9 kg; you weigh 65-90 kg. A 1% reduction in body weight saves more than a 1% reduction in bike weight because the absolute number is larger. Address body composition before upgrading components.
What is a healthy body fat percentage for a competitive cyclist?
For male amateur cyclists, 10-15% is a reasonable competitive range. For females, 18-24%. Going below these ranges for performance reasons requires careful monitoring and carries health risks that typically outweigh the marginal W/kg gain.
