FTP gets all the attention, but time to exhaustion at FTP is arguably more important for real-world performance. Two riders with identical FTP numbers but different TTE capacities will have completely different race experiences: one fades after 25 minutes at threshold while the other holds it for 50 minutes. The rider with the longer TTE has a functionally higher FTP in any event lasting more than half an hour.

The training is straightforward but demands patience. You build TTE by gradually extending the duration of threshold efforts — not by going harder. If your longest sustained threshold effort is 20 minutes, your next goal is 22 minutes, then 25, then 28. Adding 2-3 minutes per week is manageable progression. Trying to jump from 20 minutes to 40 minutes in a single session teaches your body nothing except how to fail.

    Functional threshold power is often described as the power sustainable for approximately one hour, but in practice most amateur cyclists can sustain FTP for only 30-40 minutes. The gap between laboratory-defined threshold and real-world sustainable duration is largely a training artefact — athletes who train with longer threshold intervals develop greater lactate steady-state capacity and can sustain a higher fraction of their maximum for longer durations.

  1. Establish your current TTE with a sustained threshold test

    After a warm-up, ride at your FTP (use a recent 20-minute test and multiply by 0.95) and hold it until you can no longer maintain the target power. The duration of this effort is your current TTE. This is not a test you do every week — once at the start and once at the end of a training block is sufficient.

  2. Build threshold interval duration progressively over 8 weeks

    Week 1: 2×15 min at FTP. Week 2: 2×17 min. Week 3: 2×20 min. Week 4 (recovery): 2×12 min. Week 5: 1×25 min + 1×15 min. Week 6: 1×30 min + 1×15 min. Week 7: 1×35 min. Week 8: Retest TTE. This progression adds duration gradually while the recovery week prevents accumulated fatigue.

  3. Support TTE development with 2-3 hours of zone 2 riding per week

    Zone 2 training improves mitochondrial density and fat oxidation rate, both of which extend TTE by reducing reliance on glycogen at threshold intensity. These rides should be properly easy — you should be able to hold a conversation throughout. Even two 90-minute zone 2 sessions per week provides meaningful aerobic base development.

WHAT CYCLISTS GET WRONG

  • MISTAKETraining threshold intervals that are too short to build TTE.

    FIXIntervals of 5-8 minutes improve VO2max and short-duration power, not sustained threshold capacity. To build TTE, your threshold intervals must last at least 15 minutes and ideally 20-40 minutes. The duration is the training stimulus.

  • MISTAKEIncreasing intensity rather than duration when progress stalls.

    FIXTTE improves through duration, not intensity. If you can hold FTP for 25 minutes, the next step is 28 minutes at the same power — not 25 minutes at a higher power. Increasing intensity shifts the training effect toward VO2max rather than threshold endurance.

  • MISTAKENeglecting fuelling during long threshold intervals.

    FIXThreshold efforts lasting more than 20 minutes deplete glycogen significantly. Take a gel or drink with carbohydrate during recovery between intervals or even during the effort itself. Under-fuelled threshold work teaches your body to fail at a lower duration than it is capable of.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a good time to exhaustion at FTP?
For amateur cyclists, sustaining FTP for 40-50 minutes is strong. Professionals can sustain FTP (which is itself much higher) for 50-70 minutes. If your TTE is under 30 minutes, there is significant room for improvement through structured threshold training.
Does TTE improve with just zone 2 training?
Zone 2 training improves the aerobic underpinning that supports TTE — particularly fat oxidation and mitochondrial density — but it does not directly train the lactate clearance capacity that determines threshold sustainability. The most effective approach combines zone 2 base work with progressive threshold intervals.
How does TTE relate to race performance?
TTE is arguably the most practically relevant metric for events lasting 30-90 minutes. A rider with an FTP of 260 watts and a TTE of 55 minutes will outperform a rider with an FTP of 270 watts and a TTE of 35 minutes in any event lasting longer than 35 minutes. The combination of FTP and TTE determines your race power, not FTP alone.
