For most amateur riders, though, the gearing range matched to the climbs they actually ride matters more day to day than whether their groupset is the flagship or two tiers down.

The mechanical-versus-electronic debate gets treated as more consequential than it usually is in practice. Electronic shifting is noticeably nicer to use — consistent, precise, easy front shifts — but mechanical groupsets are reliable, cheaper to maintain, and easier to fix roadside if something goes wrong on a long ride.
