This is one of those maintenance tasks that costs almost nothing to do but saves serious money if you stay on top of it. A chain is a consumable — it is designed to wear out and be replaced. The issue is that a worn chain damages the cassette and chainrings, which are much more expensive. A new chain costs 20-40 GBP. A new cassette costs 40-100 GBP. A new chainring set can be 60-150 GBP. Replace the chain on time and the cassette lasts through 3-4 chains. Run the chain too long and you are replacing everything at once.

Anthony checks his chain every 500 km with a Park Tool chain checker — it takes literally five seconds. If the 0.5 side drops in, the chain gets replaced that week. If it does not, he puts the tool away and checks again in another 500 km. The total time invested per year is about two minutes.     Chain wear is not about the chain stretching like a rubber band — it is about the internal rollers wearing down, which increases the effective pitch of each link. As the pitch increases, the chain no longer sits properly on the cassette and chainring teeth, concentrating load on fewer teeth and accelerating their wear. The damage is exponential: a chain at 0.5% wear causes negligible cassette damage, but by 0.75% the damage rate has increased dramatically. Checking and replacing at 0.5% for modern drivetrains is the cost-optimal strategy.

  1. Buy a chain checker tool and learn to use it

    A Park Tool CC-2, Pedro's Chain Checker, or Shimano TL-CN42 costs 5-15 GBP. To use it: shift to the large chainring, place the tool's hook end on a chain roller, and let the measuring end rest on the chain. If the measuring end drops between two rollers, the chain has reached the indicated wear level. Check both the 0.5 and 0.75 markings (or 0.5 and 1.0 on some tools).

  2. Set a calendar reminder to check wear every 500-1,000 km

    Most cycling computers track total distance. Set a reminder at every 500 km interval to check chain wear. In dry conditions, a well-maintained chain typically lasts 3,000-5,000 km. In wet or gritty conditions, this can drop to 1,500-2,500 km. Regular checking catches wear before it reaches the danger zone.

  3. Replace the chain before it damages the cassette

    When the chain checker shows 0.5% wear on an 11 or 12-speed drivetrain, order a new chain immediately. After fitting the new chain, test-ride it on the old cassette. If it skips under load on the smallest cogs, the cassette has already sustained wear damage and needs replacing too. If it shifts cleanly, the cassette is fine — you caught it in time.
