Traffic riding is a skill, not a gamble. Riders who position themselves correctly, communicate clearly, and read the road are overwhelmingly safe. The ones who get into trouble are usually either too far left — hugging the gutter where they are invisible and have no room to manoeuvre — or too unpredictable, weaving between lanes without signalling.

The single most important rule: own your space. Riding 1.0-1.5 metres from the kerb feels counterintuitive at first because it puts you further into the lane. But the data is clear: drivers give you wider passes when you are visible and central. When you hug the gutter, drivers try to squeeze past without moving out, and that is where the close passes happen.

At junctions and roundabouts, take the centre of the lane. This makes you unavoidable in a driver's field of view and prevents them from turning across you. Yes, it means the car behind waits. That is the point — they can see you, and they pass when it is safe.

    This position makes you visible in wing mirrors, avoids drain covers and debris, and forces overtaking drivers to move into the next lane. Practise on quiet roads first until the position feels natural.

  2. Take primary position at hazard points

    Move to the centre of the lane at junctions, roundabouts, traffic lights, road narrowings, and parked cars. This prevents drivers from attempting unsafe passes at pinch points. Move back to the secondary position (1.0-1.5 m from kerb) on open road.

  3. Signal clearly and make eye contact

    Signal turns 3-5 seconds before you make them. At junctions, look at the driver and establish eye contact — if they have not seen you, assume they will pull out. Point to where you are going, not just left or right.

  4. Scan constantly and plan escape routes

    Check behind you every 10-15 seconds with a quick head turn or mirror. Look through the windows of parked cars for occupants about to open doors. Identify escape space on your left in case a vehicle encroaches.

Is hi-vis clothing necessary?
Hi-vis clothing increases detection at distance but does not prevent close passes. Road positioning has a larger effect on driver behaviour than clothing colour. That said, fluorescent yellow in daylight and reflective materials at night are sensible additions to good positioning.
Should I use a mirror?
Bar-end or helmet-mounted mirrors reduce the need for backward glances, which can cause wobble. They are useful in heavy traffic but do not replace shoulder checks — mirrors have blind spots. Try one and see if it suits your riding style.
How do I deal with aggressive drivers?
Do not engage. Do not shout, gesture, or chase. Note the registration number if possible and report dangerous driving to the police via dashcam or helmet camera footage. Your safety is worth more than being right in the moment.
Is a helmet camera worth it?
Helmet or bar-mounted cameras provide evidence in the event of a collision or near miss. Several UK police forces accept camera footage for prosecution of dangerous driving. The camera may also subtly alter driver behaviour when visible.
When should I use cycle lanes?
Use cycle lanes when they are well-maintained and free of debris, parked cars, and pedestrians. You are not legally required to use them in the UK. If a cycle lane feels unsafe — narrow, poorly surfaced, or full of hazards — ride in the main carriageway.
How do I handle roundabouts?
Take primary position (centre of the lane you need) before entering. Signal your exit clearly. On multi-lane roundabouts, position yourself in the correct lane for your exit — do not hug the inside if you are going straight on or right. Make eye contact with drivers waiting to enter.
