HOW DO YOU SET UP A CYCLING COMPUTER?

You have just bought your first cycling computer or upgraded to a new model and want to get it configured correctly before your first ride.

Setting up a cycling computer should be simple, but the number of riders who message Anthony saying their power meter keeps dropping or their GPS tracks look like a drunken spider suggests it is not as intuitive as manufacturers claim. The biggest mistake people make is skipping the firmware update. Every single new unit Anthony has set up — Garmin, Wahoo, Hammerhead — has needed a firmware update out of the box. These updates fix GPS accuracy, sensor connectivity, and stability issues. Do it first, over Wi-Fi, before you even think about pairing sensors.

The other thing that trips people up is data screen configuration. The default screens on most units show a random assortment of metrics that somebody in a product meeting thought looked good. You need to customise them for how you actually ride. If you train with power, your main screen needs power, heart rate, cadence, and elapsed time. If you are doing intervals, you want a separate screen with lap power, lap time, and interval target. Take fifteen minutes to set this up properly and you will not be jabbing at your screen mid-ride trying to find the data you need.

    The data you display on your head unit should serve your training, not distract from it. Most riders display too many metrics and end up watching their computer instead of riding. Three to four key metrics on your main screen — power or heart rate, cadence, time, and distance or speed — gives you everything you need for daily training.   1. Complete initial setup and firmware update first

    Download the companion app (Garmin Connect or Wahoo ELEMNT), create or log into your account, connect the unit via Bluetooth, and connect to Wi-Fi. Run the firmware update — this can take 10-15 minutes. Set your personal details (weight, FTP, heart rate zones) in the app, which syncs automatically to the unit.

  2. Pair sensors outdoors, one at a time, away from other devices

    Take the unit and your sensors outside, away from turbo trainers and other riders' devices. Put on your heart rate strap, wake your power meter by spinning the cranks, and start your speed/cadence sensor by spinning the wheel. Add each sensor individually through the unit's sensor menu. Confirm each one shows live data before adding the next.

  3. Configure 2-3 data screens with cycling-specific layouts

    Main screen: power (or heart rate), speed, cadence, elapsed time, distance (5 fields). Climbing screen: gradient, elevation gain, altitude, power, heart rate (5 fields). Interval screen: lap power, lap time, heart rate, cadence (4 fields). Set auto-pause to on, auto-lap to 1 km or 1 mile, and GPS recording to every second (not smart recording) for the most accurate data.

    FIXIndoor environments are full of competing ANT+ and Bluetooth signals from turbo trainers, gym equipment, and other devices. Pair sensors outdoors, at least 10 metres from other electronic equipment, to ensure your unit locks onto the correct sensors.

Should I use ANT+ or Bluetooth for sensor connections?
ANT+ is generally more reliable for cycling computers because it supports simultaneous connections to multiple sensors without interference issues. Bluetooth is needed for connecting your phone to the unit. Most modern sensors broadcast on both protocols — use ANT+ for the head unit connection and Bluetooth for your phone app if you want to run both simultaneously.
How often should I update my cycling computer firmware?
Check for updates monthly. Garmin and Wahoo release firmware updates roughly every 4-8 weeks with bug fixes, new features, and sensor compatibility improvements. Set your unit to auto-check when connected to Wi-Fi, and install updates before they stack up — skipping several versions can occasionally cause issues.
Can I use my cycling computer with a smart trainer indoors?
Yes. Most Garmin and Wahoo units pair with smart trainers via ANT+ FE-C protocol, recording power, cadence, and speed from the trainer. However, most riders use apps like Zwift or TrainerRoad for indoor sessions instead. If you do use your head unit indoors, disable GPS to avoid phantom distance from signal bounce.
