You can train for alpine climbs from the Netherlands if you structure it properly. The physical demands of a 40-minute col are not mysterious — you need the power to hold 85-90% of FTP for a long time, the endurance base to do it after three hours in the saddle, and the muscular tolerance for low-cadence grinding that steep gradients force on you.

The part most flat-terrain riders underestimate is the cumulative fatigue. It is not the first climb that breaks you — it is the fourth, after 100km and 2,500m of ascending. Training sessions that put a hard effort at the end of a long ride are more specific than fresh 2x20 intervals, because they teach your body to produce power when glycogen is running low and the legs are already loaded.

    Successful climbing preparation at sea level requires a combination of sustained threshold work and volume. The aerobic base determines how much of your threshold you can access after three hours of riding — without it, top-end power is irrelevant because you cannot reach it when fatigued.

  1. Build threshold duration progressively

    Weeks 1-4: 2x15 minutes at 90-95% FTP. Weeks 5-8: 2x20 minutes. Weeks 9-11: 3x20 minutes. The goal is extending how long you can hold near-threshold power, not pushing the ceiling higher.

  2. Add end-of-ride intensity

    Once a fortnight, extend your long ride by 30 minutes and include 2x10 minutes at tempo in the final hour. This trains the specific fatigue resistance that alpine days demand — hard efforts on tired legs.

  3. Simulate climbing with low-cadence force reps

    On the steepest local hill or on a turbo trainer at high resistance, do 6x3 minutes at 60-65 rpm, zone 3-4 intensity, with 3 minutes easy between. This builds the muscular endurance for sustained low-cadence climbing.

    FIXAlpine climbs last 20-60 minutes. Train the duration, not the intensity. A 5-minute VO2max interval is valuable for general fitness but does not replicate the sustained demand of a 45-minute col.

    FIXYou will need 60-90g of carbohydrate per hour during a mountain day. If your gut is not trained for this intake, race day is not the time to find out. Practise your nutrition strategy on every long ride.

Can you train for mountains if you live somewhere flat?
Yes. Threshold intervals, long rides, and low-cadence force work on a turbo trainer replicate the physical demands effectively. Bridges, overpasses, and car park ramps also work for short repeated climbs. The preparation is less romantic than riding actual mountains, but it works.
How many weeks do you need to prepare for an alpine event?
A minimum of 12 weeks of structured preparation, assuming you already have a reasonable aerobic base. If you are starting from scratch, allow 16-20 weeks. The final two weeks should include a taper to arrive fresh.
Should I lose weight before a mountain event?
Only if you have weight to lose without compromising power. Losing muscle or under-fuelling to cut a kilogram will cost you more power than the weight saves. Focus on training and nutrition quality; body composition follows.
