Multi-day events are a completely different beast from single-day rides, and the mistake most people make is training only for day one. Day one is rarely the problem. You are fresh, motivated, well-fed, and running on adrenaline. The real test comes on day three when your legs are heavy, your backside is sore, you slept badly, and you have to get back on the bike and do it again. Training for that specific scenario is what separates finishers from DNFs.

Anthony's consistent recommendation is back-to-back weekends. Once a month, ride long on Saturday and long again on Sunday. These do not need to be race-pace efforts — in fact, they should be at the same moderate intensity you plan to ride during the event. The purpose is teaching your body to produce output on fatigued legs and to practise the complete recovery routine: post-ride nutrition, stretching, sleep, and morning preparation. By the time you reach your event, back-to-back riding should feel normal rather than exceptional.

    The primary cause of deteriorating performance across multi-day events is progressive glycogen depletion. Riders who fail to replenish glycogen stores fully between stages accumulate a deficit that cannot be overcome mid-event. The solution is aggressive refuelling: 1.0-1.2g of carbohydrate per kg of body weight per hour in the first 4 hours after each stage, combined with adequate in-ride fuelling of 60-90g per hour during stages.

  1. Schedule back-to-back long ride weekends monthly

    Starting 16 weeks before your event, ride 4-5 hours on Saturday and 3-4 hours on Sunday at least once per month. Build to 5-6 hours Saturday and 4-5 hours Sunday in the final month. Keep intensity at Zone 2 — the purpose is duration and fatigue resilience, not power development.

  2. Practise your complete recovery routine during training weekends

    After Saturday's ride, execute your full recovery protocol: refuel immediately (carbohydrate-protein shake within 30 minutes), stretch for 15 minutes, eat a large meal within 2 hours, and aim for 8-9 hours of sleep. Note how you feel on Sunday morning. This routine should be identical to what you plan to do during the event.

  3. Train fuelling as seriously as fitness

    During every long ride, practise consuming 60-90g of carbohydrate per hour from the same products you will use during the event. Test your stomach's tolerance, find products that sit well after 4 hours of riding, and calculate exactly how much you need to carry between feed stations.

    FIXPace for the final day, not the first. If your event is 5 days, ride day one at 65-70% of your single-day effort. The energy you save on days 1-2 pays enormous dividends on days 4-5 when other riders are fading.

How many hours per day can you realistically ride in a multi-day event?
For well-prepared amateur riders, 5-8 hours per day is sustainable for 3-7 days. Beyond 8 hours daily, sleep deprivation and cumulative fatigue become severe limiters. Ultra-endurance events with 12+ hour days require specific ultra-distance preparation and are a different category entirely.
Should you rest completely on rest days during multi-day events?
Light spinning (30-45 minutes at Zone 1) promotes blood flow and recovery better than complete rest. Lying still all day often leads to stiffness and a worse feeling the next morning. An easy spin, stretching, and a massage or foam roll is the optimal rest-day protocol.
What strength work helps for multi-day events?
Core endurance is the priority — planks, side planks, and dead bugs build the trunk stability needed for 5+ hours in the saddle daily. Single-leg work (split squats, step-ups) builds the muscular endurance that prevents knee and hip pain from accumulating over days. Two sessions per week in the build phase, reducing to one per week in the final 4 weeks before the event.
