Tubeless on road is one of those topics where half the internet says it is a revelation and the other half says it is a mess. Both sides are right. When tubeless works — and it works most of the time — it is properly brilliant. You ride over glass, thorns, and sharp debris that would have given you a flat with inner tubes, and the sealant handles it without you even knowing. The lower pressures mean the bike feels more planted in corners and more comfortable over rough surfaces, which is not just a feel-good thing — research on rolling resistance shows that lower pressure on rough roads is measurably faster.

The mess comes at installation and maintenance. Getting a tubeless tyre seated on the rim for the first time can involve a compressor, a lot of sealant sprayed up the wall, and language your neighbours do not want to hear. If you get a cut too large for the sealant to handle, you are fitting an inner tube by the roadside anyway — so carry one regardless.

In controlled conditions on smooth roads, the difference is negligible — roughly 1–3 watts per tyre. The real-world advantage comes from running lower pressures on imperfect roads, where tubeless allows you to find the right pressure without risking pinch flats. On rough tarmac, that lower pressure is measurably faster because the tyre absorbs surface irregularities instead of bouncing over them.
How much does a tubeless conversion cost?
If your wheels are already tubeless-ready, the conversion costs roughly $30–50 for valves, rim tape (if needed), and sealant. If you need new tyres as well, budget $80–150 per pair for quality tubeless-specific road tyres. If your wheels are not tubeless-compatible, you would need a new wheelset, which changes the equation entirely.
Can I convert any wheel to tubeless?
