The cramping conversation has been stuck in the 1990s for too long. Most cyclists still reach for salt tablets and electrolyte drinks as their first line of defence, but the evidence has moved on. Here is the practical implication: if you cramp at mile 80 of a century ride, the most likely cause is that you rode miles 1-60 too hard for your current fitness. Your muscles fatigued beyond the point where the nervous system could maintain orderly contraction. No amount of sodium fixes that — you needed more specific training or better pacing.

Sodium still matters, especially in heat. But it is a contributing factor in specific conditions, not the universal explanation riders have been sold for decades.

    Start 5-10% below target power and build into the effort. The riders who cramp least are those who negative-split or hold even pacing. Going out too fast front-loads neuromuscular fatigue.

  3. Match sodium intake to sweat rate in heat

    If you are a heavy sweater (more than 1.2 litres per hour) or riding in heat above 30 degrees Celsius, add 500-700 mg sodium per litre of fluid. A sweat patch test quantifies your individual losses.

  4. Keep pickle juice or mustard sachets in your jersey

    If a cramp starts, 30-60 ml of pickle juice or a mustard sachet can abort it within seconds via TRP channel activation. This is not a hydration effect — it is a neural reflex.

Why do cramps happen more in races than training?
