TSS is the single most useful number for managing training load over weeks and months. It does not tell you what kind of work to do — that is where zones and periodisation come in — but it tells you how much total stress you are accumulating. Think of it as a budget. You have a weekly TSS budget based on your recovery capacity, and every ride spends from it.

The trap is treating TSS as a target rather than a guardrail. Riders who chase a weekly TSS number often fill gaps with junk miles that add fatigue without the right stimulus. Better to plan your quality sessions first, note their TSS contribution, and then fill remaining capacity with easy riding.

  1. Establish your current weekly TSS baseline

    Look at the last four weeks of riding and calculate your average weekly TSS. This is your current tolerance. Increases should be gradual — no more than 5-10% per week to avoid overreaching. If your baseline is 350 TSS/week, jumping to 500 in a single week is a recipe for illness or injury.

  2. Pre-plan weekly TSS distribution across sessions

    Allocate your weekly TSS budget before the week begins. A typical five-day training week might look like: two interval sessions at 80-100 TSS each, one long ride at 150 TSS, and two easy recovery rides at 40-50 TSS each. This totals 390-450 TSS with a clear mix of stimulus and recovery.

  3. Use TSS to schedule recovery weeks

    Every third or fourth week, reduce total TSS by 40-50%. If your build weeks average 400 TSS, a recovery week should sit around 200-240 TSS. Maintain some intensity but cut volume significantly. This is where adaptation consolidates.

Most well-trained amateurs sit between 300-500 TSS per week during a build phase. Recreational riders might train at 150-250 TSS. Elite amateurs and semi-professionals can handle 600-800 TSS. The right number depends entirely on your recovery capacity, training history, and life stress — there is no universal target.
Can I calculate TSS without a power meter?
Training Peaks offers hrTSS (heart rate-based TSS) as an estimate, and Strava produces a similar Relative Effort score. These are less precise than power-based TSS because heart rate responds to heat, caffeine, fatigue, and other variables, but they provide a useful proxy if power data is not available.
What is the difference between TSS and CTL?
TSS is the stress score from a single ride. CTL (Chronic Training Load) is a rolling average of your daily TSS over approximately 42 days. CTL represents your accumulated fitness — the higher it is, the greater your capacity to tolerate training load. TSS is the input; CTL is the outcome.
