A helmet is the one piece of cycling equipment where false economy is legitimately dangerous. Every other component on your bike can be nursed, repaired, or ridden past its optimal life without serious consequence. A degraded helmet provides the illusion of protection while failing to deliver it. The EPS foam — the material that actually absorbs the impact in a crash — degrades invisibly over time and compresses permanently after any impact.

Anthony's rule is simple: if the helmet is over four years old, replace it. If it has been in any crash or significant drop, replace it immediately. A quality helmet costs less than a single A&E visit, and the manufacturing date is printed inside every helmet. The riders who baulk at replacing a five-year-old helmet are often the same riders who spend hundreds on carbon bottle cages. The priorities need recalibrating.

    The protective capacity of a cycling helmet is entirely dependent on the structural integrity of the EPS foam liner. In a crash, the foam absorbs energy by crushing — converting kinetic energy into deformation rather than transmitting it to the skull. Degraded foam crushes less uniformly and absorbs less energy. The clinical difference between a fresh helmet and a degraded one is the difference between a concussion and a skull fracture in the same impact scenario.

  1. Find the manufacture date inside your current helmet

    Look for a sticker or stamp inside the helmet showing the production date or a date code. If the helmet is more than 3 years old from manufacture, begin planning a replacement. If it is more than 5 years old, replace it now regardless of how it looks. If no date is visible, err on the side of replacing it.

  2. Inspect the EPS foam for signs of degradation

    Remove any removable pads and look at the white foam. Cracks, flaking, or soft spots indicate degradation. Press firmly with your thumb — the foam should feel consistently dense with no give. Any area that feels softer than the rest has been compromised, either by impact or degradation. Yellow discolouration suggests UV damage.

  3. Store helmets properly to maximise lifespan

    Keep your helmet in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Do not store it on the rear window shelf of a car, on a radiator, or in a hot garage. UV radiation and heat are the primary accelerants of EPS degradation. A helmet stored properly may last toward the 5-year end of the replacement window; one left in a hot car may degrade in 2-3 years.

    FIXEPS foam crushes internally without any visible change to the outer shell. After any impact, the foam at the contact point is permanently compressed and will provide significantly less protection in a subsequent crash. Replace the helmet — many manufacturers offer crash replacement discounts.

    FIXThe manufacture date is a safety clock, not a service interval. A 5-year-old helmet with perfect shell condition still has degraded foam. Set a calendar reminder for 3 years after manufacture to begin shopping for a replacement, and replace by 5 years at the absolute latest.

  • MISTAKEAssuming expensive helmets last longer than cheap ones.

    FIXThe EPS foam in a top-end helmet degrades at the same rate as the foam in a budget helmet. Price differences relate to weight, ventilation, aerodynamics, and fit systems — not to foam longevity. A five-year-old premium helmet is no safer than a five-year-old entry-level one.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do MIPS helmets last longer than standard helmets?
No. MIPS is a rotational-impact reduction system (a low-friction layer between shell and head) that does not affect the lifespan of the EPS foam. The foam degrades at the same rate regardless of whether the helmet has MIPS, WaveCel, SPIN, or any other technology. The 3-5 year replacement timeline applies equally.
Is dropping a helmet the same as crashing in it?
A drop from handlebar height (about 1 metre) may or may not damage the foam depending on the surface and force. If the helmet landed on concrete or tarmac with significant force, treat it as compromised. If it rolled off a table onto carpet, it is likely fine. When in doubt, inspect the foam by pressing firmly around the impact area — any soft spot means replacement.
How do I dispose of an old cycling helmet safely?
Cut the straps and crush the foam before disposing of the helmet in general waste to prevent anyone retrieving and using it. The foam is polystyrene and the shell is typically polycarbonate — neither is commonly recyclable through standard household recycling. Some specialist recycling programmes exist but availability varies by region.
