DELOAD WEEK

A planned recovery week with 40-60% reduction in training volume. Allows accumulated fatigue to clear while maintaining fitness. Typically scheduled every 3-4 weeks.

Training creates fatigue and fitness simultaneously. A deload week lets fatigue dissipate faster than fitness, resulting in net performance gain (supercompensation). Most amateurs never deload — they train hard continuously until they break or burn out. Joe Friel's principle: the deload should feel too easy. If it doesn't, you've probably loaded too little in the preceding weeks.
