SUPERCOMPENSATION

The physiological principle where the body rebuilds stronger after a training stimulus, provided adequate recovery is given. The foundation of all training adaptation.

Training creates fatigue and fitness simultaneously. During recovery, fitness is retained while fatigue dissipates — the net result is higher performance than before the training stimulus. This is supercompensation. The timing matters: train again too soon (still fatigued) and you dig a hole. Wait too long and the fitness gain fades. Periodisation is the art of timing training stimuli to stack supercompensation cycles.
