GLUCONEOGENESIS

The metabolic process of producing glucose from non-carbohydrate sources (amino acids, lactate, glycerol). Becomes significant when glycogen stores are depleted during long rides.

When glycogen runs low, the liver produces glucose from alternative substrates. This process is slow and energy-expensive, which is why performance drops dramatically when glycogen-depleted. Gluconeogenesis is the body's emergency fuel system. Chronic reliance on it drives muscle catabolism — one reason RED-S is destructive for endurance athletes.
