LIVER GLYCOGEN

Glycogen stored in the liver (~100g / 400 kcal). Primary role: maintaining blood glucose for the brain. Depletes overnight and during fasted exercise.

When liver glycogen depletes, blood glucose drops, producing bonk cognitive symptoms (confusion, mood collapse, dizziness). Depletes overnight during sleep — why morning fasted rides feel harder and breakfast before long rides matters. Liver replenishes rapidly with carbohydrate intake.
