METABOLIC EFFICIENCY

The ability to oxidise fat at progressively higher intensities, sparing glycogen. Improved through zone 2 training and carbohydrate periodisation.

A metabolically efficient cyclist burns more fat at moderate intensity, preserving glycogen for surges and the final hour. Measurable via metabolic cart (RER) or inferred from field: bonking at hour 3 despite fuelling suggests low metabolic efficiency. Primary driver: zone 2 volume. Secondary: carbohydrate periodisation. Both require months of consistent application.
