MUSCLE GLYCOGEN STORES

Glycogen stored within muscle fibres — primary fuel for moderate-to-high intensity cycling. Capacity: 300-400g in trained cyclists.

Locally stored carbohydrate fuelling every pedal stroke above low intensity. Endurance training increases storage capacity 20-50%. Carb loading can increase to 500-600g. Depletion is fibre-type specific: zone 2 depletes type I; high intensity depletes type II.
