NEUROMUSCULAR EFFICIENCY

The nervous system's ability to recruit muscle fibres effectively. Higher efficiency = more power per unit of activation. Improves with training and strength work.

Untrained: ~60-70% motor unit recruitment at max effort. Trained: 85-95%. Improvements come from high-force efforts (strength, sprints) that teach the nervous system to fire more units simultaneously. Early strength gains are 'neural'. For masters cyclists, declines without sprint and heavy strength work.
