SADDLE SETBACK

The horizontal distance from the bottom bracket centre to the tip (or a reference point) of the saddle, measuring how far back the rider sits relative to the pedals.

Traditionally quantified by the KOPS method (knee over pedal spindle), modern bike-fit practice prefers measuring setback directly and adjusting based on rider comfort, power output, and physiology. More setback tends to favour sustained power, hamstring recruitment, and climbing; less setback favours aerodynamic position and short-duration power. Changes of 1cm can materially change bike fit and should always be paired with saddle-height adjustment.
