Rowman, it's stage 10 of the Jiro Ditalia
Rowman, it's stage 10 of the Jiro Ditalia. Let's cure that intro! The big question is this. How do we use cycling as a tool to improve our health, our happiness and our longevity? That is the question on this podcast, and give you the answers. My name is Anthony Walsh, and welcome to the Rowman Podcast. Roadman, welcome back to another Roadman, Giro D'Italia podcast. How is everybody keeping on this beautiful day? Today we had the shortest stage of the Giro D'Italia, 133 kilometers. It's almost a stroll in the park, finishing in fog now, and it was destined to be a sprint day as I flagged at the outset yesterday but it turned out to actually not be as boring a stage as you would have imagined. Normally on a sprint stage you're pretty safe, turning it on, like 10k to go and you're not going to miss much. But there was a bit of drama in this stage today which I'm going to talk about in a second, but before I do, a gentle nudge reminds you about patreon.com. Patreon is how we fund the podcast, Patreon is how we're able to keep going daily during this year of the Thalia. We've all seen the impact the COVID on small businesses and the importance of support in small businesses if you think their product or service is valuable and that's what Patreon is your chance to do. Actually yesterday I posed the question and asked somebody to come back to me in Instagram if they knew the answer on my dms roadman.soitlin over on instagram if they knew why Dan Martin was wearing a different color jersey to the rest of his teammates it was a slightly different shade jersey and it had me perplexed because it's not a national champs jersey it's not a leader classification jersey apparently it's something that israel start-up nation are testing and it's wearing a slightly different shade for the team leader on that day so chimeleuide their sprinter on a sprint stage today was wearing a slightly different jersey. Interesting, I didn't know that was legal inside the UCI rules, but it definitely makes life a little bit easier for their teammates because they can pick the team leader out a little bit easier, but I don't know, I actually hope that's not something we see coming in across the rest of the Peloton. I don't know if I like that idea. It starts becoming harder to pick out team colors. Another question I had on Instagram, which I wanted to get before I dive into the stage, as well as who decides what order. When it starts getting hard and the peloton is strung out, how do they decide what order, what teams right where. So the typical order is a team that's riding and committed to for whatever strategic reason are putting in the horsepower there on the front of the bunch. So if you have a rider who's committing energy on the front, your team is normally going to fall in behind that rider. After that, we typically see the leading GC team falling behind that and after that then it's a bit of a free for all. So today for example Bora took it up and done much of the riding so we seen Bora on the front with trigger four guys changing off but the rest of the Bora team sitting on the train behind them and then we had the Inio swift Bernal looking resplendent and brilliant in pink if I do say so he looks like how a grand tour leader should look and he's a little bit of a swagger back and we've seen that in his post-race interview today. The conference is back a little bit to Shoi in secure Bernal which we definitely all warmed to yesterday.
Feel like we didn't get to know Bernal very much when he won the Tour…
I feel like we didn't get to know Bernal very much when he won the Tour de France. He seemed like a kid who was maybe afraid to let his personality shine but everybody who watched that interview yesterday and seen him teary-eyed within his forest grand tour stage has warmed to Bernal. I think he's gonna be a great ambassador for Colombia and a great ambassador for Salikal at large the way he's conducted himself across this tour so far but Bernal yeah looking amazing in pink so his team falling lying just behind the border guys and Bora went to work today man did they go to work and I always say it but it's a hard job rowing for Bora if you're looking for a job that you work for every single penny day pay you Bora rowing for Saagans team that's it. So like Saagans can't sprint like you used to sprint so his tactic in the last couple years. It's been to improve his climbing and really putting the boys to work on the climbs so they can drop other sprinters. He effectively tries to drop all the fast men over climbs so a real Saagand day at the moment is a sprint stage with like a cat too and a couple of cat trees in it. And that's what we're seeing today. His boy has ripped it up for the day and they like tore shit out of Viviani so he had no sprint in the end. Nizola was dropped and we've seen actually quite a dramatic chase where Nizolo from Asos Kubeka and his teammate Victor Carprenaerts were trying to chase back on after getting dropped. I just don't know where he was in Zolo's teammates. Surely the whole team can't have got dropped on the climb. Carprenaerts was the only one who made it over the climb. It was just bizarre that it was just the two of them trading off because even if he gets back with the two lads trading off Carprenaerts and Nizolo he's going to be hooked. The legs are going to be completely ruined but yeah he was dropped, Grune awakens dropped, point leader Tim Malek was dropped, Viviani detour shit out of me, no sprinting in the end so it was a real solid day from the border boys, they went to work hard. And we actually had another sprint which was pretty entertaining for bonus seconds, we seen the GC boys going out of Bernal and Remko going for bonus points in the end, it was like Remko got two bonus second to Bernal got one. What was most impressive was Filippo Ghana bringing Bernal up and that's where we're watching. And I came from, oh man the speed of them on it. We know Ghana is the fastest in the world in a straight line like that but what Bernal was in his wheel just getting sucked along. And another questionable piece, a question, Kubeka, I saw some boys, and Zola was left so isolated. But in another bizarre thing we had Israel's startup nation, S.N. sharing the work of Bora for the last like 10, 15k. Chimaloy is not gonna win that sprint. And they're sprinting for a podium. Chimaloy is toward today, behind Saigon and Gaviria. Chimaloy is sprinting for a podium and Dan is going for a podium on GC and they're wasting for her power contributing to that sprint today. It was unnecessary and I think they're gonna rue it out there. They're not gonna have as many helpers as they should for Dan. And It's just bad tactics, it's bad director calls, it's yeah, I don't like it at all. Today's stage, it was for any sprinters out there, I watched Saigon in the last three caves, an exhibition in how to hold your position, how to move around a closer bunch.
Saigon pulled off a stage win, he won the exact same stage last year…
Saigon pulled off a stage win, he won the exact same stage last year in the jure of the Talia stage 10, but in different circumstances he pulled off a sweet stage win, Gaviria second, he had questioned why he didn't follow his lead outman in the last couple of 100 meters and Chimaloy from Israel start up nation. After born in Summa Dan Martin's valuable lieutenant's pulls out podium. Viviani from me was the big loser. He got held up a little bit by a crash but ultimately I think it was just no legs from getting tore apart by the Bora boys for the day finishing out in ninth. So GC remains one second change and puts basically on change with Bernal leading the race 38 hours in. Remco's at 14 seconds. Vlasov's at 22. Chaconae who's are surprised package at 37 seconds and a Tilly-A Volta is at 44 seconds. The crash in the last tree, hey, everyone's going to get the same time so if they got caught behind that they'll just get the same time so no need to worry about that. Tomorrow is a rest day but it definitely won't be a Netflix and chill day for the boys. They'll try and keep the same routine, they'll get up at the same time, they'll get out on the bike at the same time, maybe do two, two and a half hours with with a little bit of intensity, depending on if they're a GC or not, they'll get their massages at the same time, dinner at the same time, and try and keep the routine so their legs don't seize open, their body doesn't get out without routine. The day after stage 11 is going to be an epic, it's one I flagged very start in this Euro preview, it's our stratobianky stage with gravel roads, it's going to be super nervous. We've thirty-five kilometres of gravel crammed into the last seventy kilometres with four separate gravel sectors. time we raced there, we were going to say it was 2007 or so. We had that amazing cadet 11 to win where he was wearing the rainbow stripes in the muck and he wiped off the rainbow stripes coming across the line. It was absolutely brilliant television so fingers crossed we get a repeat of that. I am off on a rest day first week at his year all done and look it's I'm over in your own still so it's a logistical challenge at times to bring the podcast especially and travelling so I'll definitely be glad the rest day but not as glad as those boys in the Jiro d'Alia folks.
