Pogačar's Payday and Lamby's Pursuit Record
It's stage 6 of the Vuelta España, let's cue that intro! The big question is this, how do we use cycling as a tool to improve our health, our happiness and our long changes? That is the question, and this podcast will give you the answers. My name is Anthony Welch, and welcome to the Roleman Podcast. Well man, welcome back. It is stage six of the Vuelta Aspania. We are going 158.3 kilometers. We're starting out in Rokwina and finishing it up in a nice little kicker, Alto de la Mountania, the cholera. You like that? A bit of culture there, that pronunciation. Some cool news before we even started. Tage Polgacha, we all know who he is, household name. Two years ago none of us knew who he was. Now as of today he is the highest paid rider in the world, a reported 6 million Euro a year contract. We have Sagam's on 5 million year, Froome's on 4.5 million a year. It's great to see the lads starting to get paid what they're worth. They're bridging that gap to sports like football, which is unbelievable. Also Also in other non-welta news, I love track cycling, I'm an unapologetic track nerd. If sports are an aspect of track cycling that I've been fascinated with for a long time, just for its purity, its individual pursuit, it's just covering 4km as fast as you can, man against clock. For a long time, well, forever, until yesterday, no one had ever broke the 4 minute mark, it It was really like Roger Banister's four minute mile. Four minutes for four kilometers looked like an unbreakable barrier. Felipe O'Gannard gone close, but yesterday, gravel roiter, track roiter, American sensation Ashton Lamby went under the four minute mark, three minutes 59 over in Mexico at altitude, absolutely brilliant feet, follow him over on Instagram, and you can see all the details, boyky's riding, dropped 30K on the boyky's riding, epic boy. a nice set of zip wheels and argon frame, some watch out pamble bar extensions, it is pimped out if you're a tech geek. Go check that out. Today our 158 kilometer really dominated by a large, small, large to medium to small. Sounds like the weather here in Ireland. Sony, Whitrain, scattered showers but mainly dry. It was a medium-sized break. I think there was six lads in it but the main protagonist in it were Case Ball from Bora, Magnus Court Nielsen, Linderman, Ryan Gibbons and they're working all day in the break but what we're seeing is the break's getting a little bit smarter. The break's node is very formulaic game that gets played out now especially in grand tours where they let a break go. The big teams come, they close the road down, the break get a big lead, the palatons have done the calculation so they know that they need one minute per 10k or whatever it is to reel them in so they just start working at the right time to catch them just before the line. The reason for this is if you catch them with 20k to go, now you have a fresh set of breaks going again that you have to deal with. So they're making the calculation to catch them just on time, but the breaks have started getting smarter. So lads are holding a bit back in the break, so when the peloton start winding it up with 40k to go, the break also start winding it up with 40k to go, and they've done that perfectly today. So we see movies start doing a lot of the work, and when 8k to gold they had the peloton absolutely lined out but today's stage was all about one thing and it was that finishing kicker. It was a 1.9 kilometer climb wound up through a little town stunning scenery. The Vuelta and actually the grand tours in general, the tour of Vuelta de Jiro, they are just an ad for his tourism board.
Magnus Cort Wins, Roglič Takes Red
That's why it's so gutting that the tour of oral must cancel because it was visually spectacular. 1.9km climb, it looked made for a pickock but pickock left his legs back in Tokyo so he wasn't a factor at all. Innyos took it up heavy with 3k to go like they hit the front so much so that Karapaz couldn't follow his own domestic. They must have taught Bernal was on a super day. As a torn down he wasn't. Who was on a super day? It was unbelievable. It was a friend of the show, Bling Matchus, Hadaman, few months back. GENT of a man, climbing unbelievable, climbing up there with all the hitters as he'd expect. Red jersey, race leader, King Kenny Ellison from Trek was dropped on the climb and he's no longer race leader. But the drama played out when we say Magnus Kort Nielsen going on the attack from the break and the GC guys getting the calculation wrong. Magnus Kort Nielsen held on for a famous victory at the top of this climb. Rogloch came and he cruised into second, he looks super. And that's what Roglatch does. He chips away, chips away. You never see him taking, you know, 10 minutes, five minutes, four minutes. He takes 10 seconds here, 20 seconds there, and that's kind of his MO. With a lot of, I'm gonna be completely honest. I don't know who he is, Baglioli from the corner, Quickstep in Second. The Quickstep just churned him out. Italian from the sounds of him. Sounds like something I would put maybe on my pasta dish. Having a bit of the Baglioli. Last off from Astana and Tord, Inertk, Massen Fjord, Bling Machu's fifth insane ride from Bling. Like with that sort of ride, it's hard to bet against them in races like Milan Cinremo, next season. Bernal, round it out to top six. Movies started with a big movers today. They committed a lot of energy to the chase today and they've notoriously been going for team prizes. They've a new director sport team, so it's mainly changed to focus and we're hoping they're gonna play this tactically a little bit better. So GC at the moment is Primus Roglic Leidner and now look at 3rd, 4th, 5th are all movie stars. Sorry, 2nd, 4th are all movie stars. So Einerkmas is at 25 seconds. Superman Lopez is at 36 seconds. But Verde is at 41 seconds. Bernardo Den is back in 5th. So we have 2nd, 4th all movie stars behind Roglic. And the next upcoming tree stages are all super hard before we go into the rest day. So regardless of movie star being poised, we were gonna see a GC shake up the coming days. But what I think you're gonna see with this new director, I think you're gonna see movie star, sending Reuters up the road. And they're gonna send Reuters up the road. This obviously seems a no-brainer. If you have Reuters in second toward Fort on GC, send guys up the road. But they're gonna send guys up the road to give Yumbovism a debt by a thousand cuts. We know Yumbovism are gonna try and control the race. Premus Roglage is the favorite for the race, a bona fide champion in the making. Yumbovism are so seasoned. start like we see in Sky do through Wiggins in 3-0 years, they're brilliant at roiding this 10-0 kilometer after kilometer. So that's what they're going to do. But movie stars are going to tour the mail by fire and get Lopez into the break. By fire and valverity into the break. And these are breaks, move that Yumba Vismar going to half the chase. So by chasing these, they're going to expand energy and then whichever rider is most preserved or best placed, you're going to see him go on the attack, maybe two tree stages from now.
Key Questions Heading Into Rest Day
To movie stars work if they play it as well won't be visible until maybe the day before the rest day. It's a fascinating setup for this Vuelta at the moment and I'm super excited to be bringing you guys the podcast on it. The big questions in my head going into these tough stages ahead. Movie star, how are they going to play this tactically? Will they do it as I suggested or will they focus like they've done for almost a decade on that almost meaningless team prize? Next big question, how is Aegon Bernal's back? He's complained for the last two seasons about his back, he said it was going to be an ongoing issue. I don't know, he just looks twisted, he doesn't look right on the bike to me. And then Primo's Roglage, he looks super at the moment, but don't forget he's rolled the tour and then straight into the Olympics where he's Olympic time trial champion. How well recovered is he from those exertions? They're a big question to my mind to gotta get answers. Fascinating stuff in the days ahead folks. Looking forward to the next few days, I'll be bringing you a podcast again tomorrow on it. for that one. Do all this good stuff, roadmap to keep growing the podcast.
