METHODOLOGY AND LIMITS

Formula: estimated sweat loss equals pre-ride body mass minus post-ride body mass, plus fluid consumed, minus urine produced. Divide by duration in hours. The formula follows the 2026 UCI cycling consensus.

Measurement: one kilogram of acute mass change is treated as roughly one litre of water. Wet clothing, scale precision, respiratory water, food and unrecorded losses add error. Repeat comparable tests.

Interpretation: the result estimates loss during one ride. It does not prescribe 100% replacement, measure sweat sodium or diagnose dehydration. Individual planning should avoid both substantial deficit and fluid-related body-mass gain.

Safety: confusion, seizure, collapse, loss of coordination or altered consciousness during or after exercise needs urgent medical help. Do not use this tool to decide whether to give water or salt.

Quick answer

A cycling sweat-rate test estimates fluid lost during one representative ride. Record dry pre- and post-ride body mass, everything you drink, any urine produced and the duration. The result belongs to those conditions: it is not a universal drinking target and it does not measure sweat sodium.

WHAT IT DOES

This calculator turns field measurements from a real ride into estimated total sweat loss and litres per hour. It keeps the inputs and formula visible, flags body-mass gain and unusually high values, and links the result to an evidence-led planning process.

It replaces Roadman's old population estimate based on body weight, intensity and temperature. Those variables affect sweat loss, but they cannot measure an individual rider's loss from a desk calculation.

    Prepare a representative ride

    Choose conditions, clothing and intensity relevant to the event or training question. Use the same reliable scale before and after.

    Measure normal behaviour

    Weigh after using the toilet in dry minimal clothing. Drink normally and record every bottle, refill and bathroom stop; do not withhold fluid for the test.

    Enter the four measurements

    Add pre- and post-ride body mass in kilograms, fluid consumed and urine in millilitres, and the ride duration.

    Attach temperature, humidity, airflow, clothing and workload to the result. Repeat comparable sessions, avoid drinking enough to gain body mass and do not assume 100% replacement is required.

The tool flags fluid-related body-mass gain so the rider can recheck measurements and avoid repeating an overdrinking pattern.

LIMITATIONS

One field result is noisy and specific to its conditions. Wet clothing, inaccurate scales, food, respiratory water and unrecorded fluid can distort it. The calculator estimates fluid loss only: it cannot measure sweat sodium, diagnose dehydration, prescribe a universal millilitres-per-hour target or decide whether symptoms need treatment.

When to see a coach

Use a qualified sports dietitian or clinician when repeated measurements are extreme, you have recurrent heat illness, confusion, collapse, persistent gastrointestinal problems, kidney or cardiovascular disease, or take medication that affects fluid or sodium balance. Confusion, seizure, collapse, loss of coordination or altered consciousness during or after exercise needs urgent medical help.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I calculate sweat rate for cycling?+

Subtract post-ride body mass from pre-ride body mass, add fluid consumed, subtract urine produced, then divide the estimated litres lost by duration in hours. Weigh in dry minimal clothing and repeat comparable rides because one result is condition-specific and noisy.

Is sweat rate the same as how much I should drink per hour?+

No. Sweat rate estimates loss during a particular ride. It is one boundary for planning, not a requirement to replace every millilitre while riding. Thirst, conditions, access, tolerance, symptoms and post-ride body-mass trends also matter, and a normally hydrated rider should not drink enough to gain body mass during prolonged exercise.

Should I avoid drinking during a sweat-rate test?+

No. Drink normally and record the amount. The formula adds consumed fluid back into estimated loss. Withholding fluid can make the session unrepresentative and is unnecessary for this field calculation.

Does the calculator tell me how much sodium I need?+

No. Sweat volume and sweat sodium concentration are separate measurements. This tool does not infer a sodium dose from fluid loss, body mass, temperature or cramping. Review food, product labels, event demands and—when justified—valid sweat-sodium testing separately.

How often should I repeat a cycling sweat-rate test?+

Repeat it in the conditions that materially change your loss: cool and hot weather, indoor and outdoor riding, different workloads or clothing. Compare like with like and treat repeated observations as a range, not a permanent personal constant.
