Anthony gets asked this a lot, and the honest answer is that it matters less than people think. Yes, your body performs slightly better in the afternoon — core temperature is higher, joints are more lubricated, and reaction times are faster. The research is real: 3-5% more power in the afternoon versus early morning. But here is the thing — that advantage is dwarfed by the benefit of simply training consistently. If your only reliable training window is 6 am before work, that is the best time for you. Skipping sessions because you cannot train at the physiologically optimal time is the worst possible trade-off.
That said, if you do train early, the warm-up becomes more important, especially after 40. Your body is cooler, stiffer, and less ready for hard efforts at 6 am than it is at 4 pm. Extend your warm-up by 10-15 minutes, start with very easy spinning, and do not hit high-intensity efforts until you feel properly ready. The riders who get injured in early morning sessions are almost always the ones who go straight into intervals without an adequate warm-up. Give your body time to come online.

The circadian variation in physical performance is well established — peak power, reaction time, and flexibility all show their highest values in the late afternoon when core body temperature peaks. For athletes over 40, this variation may be more pronounced because age-related reductions in muscle compliance and joint lubrication are most evident when core temperature is at its circadian trough. An extended warm-up of 15-20 minutes can partially compensate for morning training by raising muscle temperature to approximate afternoon levels.

If you train in the morning, extend your warm-up to 15-20 minutes of progressive spinning before any hard efforts. If you train in the afternoon, 10 minutes is usually sufficient. The circadian adaptation effect means your body adjusts its performance peak to match your habitual training time within 2-3 weeks of consistent scheduling.
Schedule key sessions (intervals, threshold) when possible at your best performance time
If your schedule allows any flexibility, place your hardest sessions in the afternoon or early evening (2-6 pm) and your easy rides in the morning. This exploits the circadian performance peak for the sessions where power output matters most and uses the lower-performance morning slot for sessions where intensity is low.
Extend the warm-up for any session starting before 8 am
Core body temperature is at its lowest between 4-7 am. For sessions starting before 8 am, add 10-15 minutes of easy spinning (Zone 1) before progressing to the prescribed intensity. Include 3-4 progressive efforts (30 seconds at increasing intensity) in the final 5 minutes of the warm-up to prepare the neuromuscular system for hard work.
