Blood pressure is something every masters cyclist should be monitoring, and the reality is that most are not. Anthony has had cardiologists and sports physicians on the podcast who all say the same thing: regular moderate cycling is one of the most powerful tools available for blood pressure management. It is not a miracle cure — if your readings are consistently above 140/90, you need medical advice — but as part of an overall approach, the evidence is very clear.

The interesting finding from the research is that it is not the hard efforts that help most with blood pressure. Zone 2 riding — the long, steady, conversational-pace stuff that forms the base of any good training plan — is the most effective intensity for reducing hypertension. So the same riding that builds your aerobic engine is also protecting your cardiovascular system. That is a compelling reason to prioritise those longer, easier rides rather than chasing intensity every session.

  2. Monitor blood pressure consistently at the same time each day

    Take readings first thing in the morning before coffee or exercise, sitting quietly for 5 minutes. Track weekly averages rather than individual readings, which fluctuate. Share trends with your GP at each review.

  3. Manage sodium and hydration alongside training

    Reduce processed food intake (the primary source of excess sodium) and stay well-hydrated. On longer rides, electrolyte drinks are still appropriate — the exercise itself offsets the sodium. Post-ride, prioritise potassium-rich foods (bananas, sweet potatoes, spinach) which support healthy blood pressure.

Can cycling cure high blood pressure?
Cycling can reduce blood pressure to normal levels in some cases, particularly stage 1 hypertension (130-139/80-89 mmHg) combined with dietary changes and weight management. However, the benefit is maintained only while you keep riding regularly. Stop exercising and blood pressure tends to return to pre-exercise levels within 2-4 weeks.
Is it safe to do hard intervals with high blood pressure?
For most people with controlled hypertension, moderate intervals are safe. However, if your blood pressure is uncontrolled (above 160/100) or you are on beta-blockers, consult your GP before high-intensity work.
