Heat illness is the one cycling risk that riders consistently underestimate. You can see a pothole and avoid it. You can feel cold and put on a jacket. But heat illness creeps up gradually — you feel fine until suddenly you do not, and the transition from uncomfortable to dangerous can happen in minutes. Anthony has seen riders collapse on group rides in 32C temperatures because they were riding at their normal intensity without adjusting for conditions.

The critical message is that hot weather demands genuine changes to how you ride, not just carrying an extra bottle. Reduce intensity, increase fluid and sodium intake, time rides for early morning or late evening, and know the symptoms that mean you must stop immediately: confusion, cessation of sweating despite heat, nausea, and dizziness. None of these are signs to push through — they are signs that your body's cooling system is failing and you are approaching a medical emergency.

An acclimatised athlete can maintain near-normal performance in heat that would be dangerous for an unacclimatised individual.

  1. Plan hot-weather rides for the coolest parts of the day

    Ride before 10 am or after 5 pm when temperatures exceed 30C. Peak heat typically occurs between 1-4 pm. If you must ride during peak hours, reduce intensity to zone 2 (conversational pace) and carry 50% more fluid than normal. Choose shaded routes where possible — urban heat islands can add 3-5C to ambient temperature.

  2. Pre-cool with ice slurry or cold water before riding in extreme heat

    Drinking 500 ml of ice slurry or very cold water 30 minutes before riding lowers core temperature by 0.3-0.5C, extending the time before you reach dangerous core temperatures. Stuffing ice in your jersey pockets and neck buff provides external cooling. These pre-cooling strategies are well supported by research from the Australian Institute of Sport.

  3. Develop a heat acclimatisation protocol before warm-weather events

    Begin heat exposure 10-14 days before your event. Start with 30 minutes of moderate exercise in heat and extend by 5-10 minutes daily. At what temperature is it unsafe to cycle?
There is no single threshold because humidity, wind, sun exposure, and individual factors all affect heat stress. As a general guide: above 30C requires modified intensity and increased hydration; above 35C is high-risk for unacclimatised riders; above 40C is dangerous for almost everyone at moderate-to-high intensity. Humid heat is significantly more dangerous than dry heat because sweat evaporation is impaired.
How much should I drink per hour in hot weather?
Individual sweat rates vary enormously (400-2,000 ml per hour), but 500-1,000 ml per hour is a reasonable starting range. To calculate your personal sweat rate, weigh yourself before and after a 1-hour ride in similar conditions — each kg lost equals approximately 1 litre of sweat.
