In Britain, if you only ride in the dry, you lose half the year. Wet-weather riding is a skill set that separates riders who train consistently from those whose fitness rises and falls with the forecast. The adjustments are straightforward — lower pressure, earlier braking, wider lines, and heightened awareness of surface hazards — but they need to become habits rather than things you remember mid-corner.

The surfaces that catch people out are always the same: white lane markings, metal drain covers, diesel patches near junctions, and fallen leaves on country lanes. Each of these is functionally an ice rink in the wet. The fix is awareness and avoidance — if you can see a painted line, ride around it; if you cannot avoid a drain cover, cross it upright and in a straight line with no braking or steering input.

    Wet-weather crashes cluster around two causes: loss of grip on low-friction surfaces (paint, metal, leaves) and rear-wheel slides caused by heavy rear braking. Training riders to identify and avoid these surfaces, and to modulate braking with emphasis on the front brake, reduces the wet-weather crash rate substantially.

  1. Reduce tyre pressure before wet rides

    Drop 5-10 psi from your dry-condition pressure. For a 28mm tyre, this might mean 65-70 psi instead of 75-80 psi. The lower pressure increases the tyre's contact patch and improves grip on wet tarmac.

  2. Double your braking distance

    Whatever point you would normally start braking for a corner or junction, move it back by the same distance again. Wet rims (on rim brakes) and wet rotors (disc brakes) both lose initial braking power until the water is cleared — squeeze the brakes lightly before you need them to dry the surfaces.

  3. Ride the darkest tarmac

    In wet conditions, the darkest, roughest tarmac has the most grip. Smooth, pale surfaces (concrete, painted areas, polished kerb stones) are the most slippery. Train your eyes to read the road surface and route your line over the grippiest available surface.

  • MISTAKERiding through puddles without knowing what is underneath.

    FIXPuddles hide potholes, drains, and debris. Ride around them unless you can see the bottom. A pothole at 30 km/h can crack a rim or cause a crash — the two seconds lost going around are always worth it.

  • MISTAKEWearing dark clothing in rain and poor visibility.

    FIXDrivers' visibility drops dramatically in rain. Wear a high-visibility gilet or jacket, use front and rear lights on flash mode even during the day, and fit reflective tape to shoes or shoe covers.

  • MISTAKEKeeping the same cornering speed as in dry conditions.

    FIXTyre grip on wet tarmac is roughly 60-70% of dry grip. Reduce cornering speed by 20-30% and take wider, more gradual lines. The time saved by carrying speed is not worth the risk of a wet-weather slide.

Are disc brakes better in the wet?
Yes. Disc brakes perform more consistently in wet conditions because the rotor is smaller, centrally located, and clears water faster than a wet rim. Rim brakes lose significant stopping power in the first revolution on a wet rim — that lag is reduced to almost nothing with discs.
What tyres are best for wet riding?
Wider tyres (28-32mm) at lower pressure provide more grip than narrow, high-pressure tyres. Tread pattern matters less than compound — softer rubber compounds grip better in the wet but wear faster. For year-round riding in a wet climate, a 28mm tyre with a grippy compound is a solid default.
Should I ride in heavy rain?
Light to moderate rain is manageable with the right kit and technique. Heavy rain, standing water, and strong crosswinds increase risk substantially. If visibility drops below 50-100 metres, consider cutting the ride short. Indoor training is always an option when conditions are properly dangerous.
