That gap is where the opportunity lives.
The changes that really matter for masters riders are threefold. First, recovery slows down. The same session that left you fresh at 35 leaves you knackered for two days at 50. This is not a sign of weakness — it is a shift in hormonal and inflammatory response that requires scheduling adjustment, not capitulation. Second, fast-twitch muscle fibres atrophy more rapidly without stimulus. If you stop sprinting and stop lifting, you lose the explosive capacity that underpins short, sharp efforts. The fix is straightforward: keep sprinting, keep doing strength work, and those fibres stay recruited. Third, connective tissue becomes less resilient, which means bike fit and movement quality matter more than ever. A poor saddle position that a 25-year-old gets away with will produce chronic injury in a 50-year-old.
The encouraging side is that endurance capacity — the ability to ride for hours at a moderate intensity — holds remarkably well with age. Slow-twitch muscle fibres are resistant to age-related decline, mitochondrial density remains responsive to training, and fat oxidation efficiency actually improves in many masters riders. Anthony has spoken to riders in their 60s who are completing multi-day events and producing Zone 2 numbers that would impress riders half their age. The engine does not stop working; it just needs different maintenance.

Extend recovery windows between hard sessions
Allow 48-72 hours between properly hard sessions after age 45. A typical week might be: hard Tuesday, easy Wednesday, hard Thursday only if well recovered (otherwise easy), long ride Saturday, rest or easy spin Sunday. Monitor morning HRV or resting heart rate to make these decisions data-driven rather than guesswork.
Get annual blood work and a bike fit review
Check ferritin, vitamin D, testosterone (if symptomatic), thyroid function, and full blood count annually. Deficiencies that a younger body compensates for can significantly impair recovery and performance after 40. Similarly, a professional bike fit review every 12-18 months catches the subtle flexibility and posture changes that accumulate with age.
