Tyres are the most important contact point between you and the road, and yet most riders run them until they are absolutely bald before considering a replacement. Anthony has seen riders show up to group rides on tyres with visible threads showing through the rubber, and that is a real safety concern — especially in the wet. A worn tyre does not just puncture more often, it grips less in corners, and that is where the real risk sits.

The practical advice is clear: inspect your tyres every month, run your thumb across the tread to check for flat spots, and look at the sidewalls for cracking. If the rear tyre has a noticeably flat centre profile instead of the rounded shape it had when new, it is time to replace it. And always replace the front tyre before the rear if you can only afford one at a time — a front tyre blowout or loss of grip is far more dangerous than a rear one.

  1. Inspect tyres monthly using the thumb test

    Run your thumb firmly across the centre tread of each tyre. A new tyre feels rounded; a worn tyre feels flat across the centre. If the centre is noticeably flat over a width of 10-15mm, the tyre has lost significant rubber and should be replaced soon. Check sidewalls for cracks, cuts, or fraying.

  2. Rotate or replace rear tyres at roughly twice the rate of fronts

    Rear tyres carry 55-60% of rider weight and wear roughly twice as fast. Some riders rotate front to rear at the halfway point (e.g., move the front to the rear at 3,000 km and fit a new front). This equalises wear but means both tyres are partly worn simultaneously.

  3. Check tyre pressure before every ride

    Under-inflation increases rolling resistance and accelerates sidewall wear. Over-inflation reduces contact patch and grip. Use a floor pump with a gauge and check manufacturer recommendations for your tyre width and rider weight.

Do tubeless tyres last longer than clinchers?
Tubeless tyres use the same rubber compounds as clinchers, so tread wear is similar. However, tubeless setups self-seal small punctures with sealant, which can extend functional life. The sealant itself needs topping up every 3-4 months as it dries out.
How does rider weight affect tyre life?
Heavier riders deform the tyre more with each revolution, generating more heat and wearing the contact patch faster. A 90 kg rider will typically get 20-30% fewer kilometres from the same tyre compared to a 65 kg rider, all else being equal.
Should I use different tyres for training and racing?
If you race, yes. Training tyres with harder compounds and puncture protection layers are more durable for daily use. Race-day tyres with softer compounds offer better grip but wear significantly faster. Running race tyres for training is expensive and unnecessary.
