Cycling shoes are one of those items that degrade so slowly you do not notice until you put on a new pair and realise how much stiffness and support you had lost. Anthony has spoken to bike fitters who say shoe condition is one of the most overlooked factors in fit assessments. A shoe that has softened through the forefoot changes your effective stack height and can introduce lateral movement that your knees compensate for over thousands of pedal strokes.
The practical test is simple: take your shoe off the bike, hold it at the toe and heel, and try to flex the sole with your hands. A new carbon-soled shoe should be virtually unbendable. If you can flex it noticeably, the sole has degraded. Nylon soles will always have some flex when new, but if a 3-year-old nylon sole flexes visibly more than it did originally, it is time for a replacement. Your feet — and your knees — will thank you.

Shoe sole degradation is one of the most common hidden causes of cycling-related knee pain. When the sole softens, the foot drops slightly at the forefoot, altering the effective leg length and knee tracking. Riders often blame their saddle or cleats when the real culprit is a five-year-old shoe with a fatigued sole. I recommend replacing shoes every 3-4 years for riders covering more than 5,000 km per year.

Test sole stiffness every 6 months with the hand-flex check
Remove the shoe from your foot, hold it at the toe box and heel, and apply firm bending pressure to the forefoot. Compare the flex to when the shoe was new (or to a display model in a shop). If the sole bends noticeably, stiffness has degraded and power transfer is compromised.
Replace Boa dials and buckles rather than entire shoes when possible
Most Boa dials are covered by a lifetime warranty and can be replaced free of charge through the Boa website. Buckle mechanisms from Shimano, Sidi, and others are available as spare parts. A new closure mechanism on a structurally sound shoe extends its life significantly.
Inspect cleat bolt threads and heel cups annually
Remove cleats completely once a year, clean bolt threads, apply a drop of grease, and re-torque to specification. If bolts spin freely without gripping, the threads are stripped and the shoe needs replacing. Check heel cups for deformation by pressing inward — they should hold their shape firmly.
