The honest answer is that six weeks of proper training changes everything. Not six weeks of noodling around on the same flat loop — six weeks of structured riding where at least one session is hard, one session is long, and one session is easy. That is the minimum effective dose, and it works whether you are 25 or 55.
Where people go wrong is expecting linear progress. Weeks one to six are rapid. Then it slows. That plateau is not failure; it is your body consolidating. Adjust the stimulus — add intervals, extend the long ride, or drop a recovery week — and the next wave of gains arrives.
If you are doing less than three sessions a week, that is the first thing to fix. Two sessions maintains fitness. Three builds it.

Test before you start and again at week six
A 20-minute FTP test or ramp test gives you a baseline. Repeat it at week six under identical conditions. Most riders see a 5-15W improvement on a first structured block.
Track the right metrics
Look at heart rate at a given power (cardiac drift), not just average speed. A lower heart rate at the same power means your aerobic system is adapting — even if your average speed has not changed.
