The base phase is the block most amateur cyclists cut short, and it is also the block that determines whether everything after it works properly. If you rush into VO2max intervals on an underdeveloped aerobic system, you will see short-term gains that plateau quickly because the underlying engine cannot support repeated hard efforts with adequate recovery.
The honest answer to how long it should last is: until it is built. For most riders who train 6-10 hours per week, that takes 8-12 weeks. You can measure it objectively — aerobic decoupling below 5%, stable resting heart rate, the ability to hold 60-70% FTP for two hours without your heart rate climbing into zone 3. When those markers are green, your base is ready and it is time to add intensity.

The duration of the base phase should be governed by adaptation markers rather than arbitrary calendar blocks. Aerobic decoupling — the relationship between heart rate and power over a sustained effort — is a practical field measure of base fitness. When it stabilises below 5% on a 90-minute effort, the primary base adaptations are in place.

Test aerobic decoupling every two weeks
Do a 90-minute ride at steady zone 2 power. Compare average heart rate in the first 45 minutes to the second 45 minutes. If the second half is more than 5% higher at the same power, your base is not yet built.
Track resting heart rate weekly
Take your resting heart rate first thing in the morning, same conditions each day. A declining trend over 6-8 weeks indicates improving aerobic fitness. A plateau suggests the base is approaching maturity.
Transition gradually, not abruptly
When your markers indicate a built base, do not jump straight to a full intensity programme. Add one hard session per week for 2-3 weeks, then increase to two. The transition from base to build should take 2-3 weeks, not happen overnight.
